Description

This is the only access to the El Pinecate craters at the moment. There has been a land dispute at the entry on Mex 8 and that dirt road is now blocked with boulders.
Others have stated that you have to get a permit at the Schuk Toak visitor center on Mex 8. We were there but they didn't ask us to pay, they just gave us directions which I uploaded as screenshots. They did say we had to pay at the entrance on Mex 2 (this one), but there was nobody to collect the fee.

The craters are stunning and worth a visit! The road in is a dirt road, mostly washboard with some soft patches and loose rock. We drove in with our 2wd VW Crafter (Sprinter van), but there were locals with their city cars too. I wouldn't recommend anything bigger than a Sprinter van, it's a little narrow sometimes with prickly plants. 4x4 not necessary, a bit higher clearance than a regular city car is a plus.
