this is a wonderful area. at&t and tmobile service is spotty but good enough to stream not good enough to run through sm reels or upload videos. just check the forest websites for seasonal closures. no signs posted stating area is currently closed but rangers came by and told us this area of the forest is close and we needed to leave. most forest roads in the area area accessible but currently closed at this time for seasonal closures. still tons of people camping in the area, but you would never know because the trees beings so much privacy.

Report Check-In

Just got informed by Forest service that Walnut Canyon is now closed (effective May 1, 2023) to camping and campfires.
They say this is a permanent closure.
I had to pack up and relocate.

Great spot, quiet and beautiful sunrise. We arrived in the dark and passed several spots that looked iffy for our 28’ class C but pressed on and eventually found a nice flat pull off spot. Would not recommend if recent rain or snowmelt as it would be very muddy and we surely would have been stuck. But ground was frozen so worked out fine. Would stay here again definitely. Very faint train noise in background but was drowned out by furnace :)

Lots of spots available in the area, some harder to get to than others. We drove to the last spot listed on iOverlander but had barely any Verizon reception so we turned around in search of reception but the best we could find was still not good enough for work (even with a booster). Stayed one night and left in the morning. Plenty of space to get some distance from neighbors!

Really cool place lots of spots and it's beautiful.

Report Check-In

Tons of space all around this area to find a little nook for yourself. Trees and sunshine and fire pits (probably no fires allowed though currently April 2022). Peaceful, quiet night. Would stay again.

Camped here three nights. Very convenient, as all other forest roads around Flagstaff were seasonally closed. Plenty of spots to choose from so you can pick what works for your rig. Most has fire rings, lots of fire wood, tree coverage for shade and privacy, ring roads for easy pull through. Look out for mud and ruts after rain! We used this as our basecamp to see Sedona because 89A south from Flagstaff is very steep and winding.

Report Check-In

Most forest roads are closed this time of year, but this one is easily accessible, turn left off paved road onto dirt road. Cleared road, but pullouts were a little wet/muddy. Found several tents, RVs and other campers along the way, but lots of open spots. Quiet, except the train I could hear in the distance (through the night). Good Verizon signal.

Wonderful campsite even in the winter. Easily accessible with an RV, though some places look more 4wd than the spot we’re. Very quiet and it’s the only wild camping anywhere near Flagstaff that’s open in the winter. Also had near perfect Verizon cell service! Love it here!
