Description

if you don't find spots near the front of the Dispersed Camping area keep following the road back. The road will become rocky, if you feel comfortable keep going. We navigated this in a Promaster and found a few more spots further back.

Super awesome spot. Road gets a little choppy but handled it fine in our pro master. We followed the road almost all the way to the end and got super lucky to get the site on the left with the sick fire place up against the huge rocks. COWS EVERYWHERE! We stayed 3 nights and would have stayed longer if we didn’t get a mouse….lol

Nice place to stay before or after the Bowie Fort hike. Washboard road and very popular this weekend.

As you come in the Happy Camper Road, you will see the day use area directly to your left with picnic tables and a pit toilet. If you turn to your right and start down the hard sand road, you will come to a number of dispersed camping sites. They have fire rings located in inlet areas off the main road. Some areas are bigger with multiple rigs in a spot, but as you head down the road, there are more individual spots. Some are tucked in next to the rocks and some are further away with nice views of the desert and mountains around. There are maybe 25 to 30 spots or so and they seem to fill up fairly quickly. We drove around Monday morning and found a spot we liked better after the weekend crowd had moved out. It is a beautiful spot. Nice and quiet and the cows roam freely and seem very comfortable sharing their home with us campers! A great spot and easy to get into spots.

Beautiful quiet clean camping spot. The cows are a neat addition. If you read about the day use area the same thing happened to us the GPS was wrong. Google gave better directions. Alaska RV in Bowie has an unadvertised dry camp area for $10 cash showers & laundry. Not fancy but cheap.

Beautiful boondocking with rock formations and mountains all around. One pit toilet that is clean and has toilet paper. Lots of area to explore and cows to see! The further up the road you get the more sandy/uneven the road gets.

We stayed at a spot before this one (probably 1-2 minute drive). This area is absolutely stunning and worth the drive out here. You can park by the rocks or away from them depending on what you like! The road this site is on does get soft in some spots but it is completely doable with 2WD and no need for high clearance. This is definitely one of our favorite spots we've ever been to. Verizon reception OK, doable for work with a booster. Also if you love cows like I do, this place is full of them! We heard multiple packs of coyotes in the area surrounding us too.
