Beautiful spot on the outskirts of town, next to a delightful river that flows down the canyon from above El Salto falls. Sizeable reasonably flat parking area with some trees along the edge for shade; there's a small bridge to where the river opens out into an artificial pool where you can swim.
This looks like a popular spot at times - there was plenty of cerveza paraphernalia I did my best to clear up, and remnants of a fire - but I had it to myself. Friendly police came to chat in late evening and said it was fine to stay, gave me their number to call in case of any hassle.
Space for big rigs, no facilities, ok phone signal. Slept peacefully with the sound of the river. And lots of monarchs flying past in November on their way south.
El Salto above is very well worth the $40 entry fee ($60 if you take your vehicle in with you), a watery wonderland with lots of natural and man-made falls. They wanted $135 to overnight there though (looked like decent toilet blocks, lots of pools for swimming, bbq areas and so on) - I didn't need any of that and am on a budget - came down here and was happy with my decision!

Incredible hidden gem of Mexico!! We will be staying for a while and I report back again soon. The drive is endless nothing but Joshua trees and deserted mountains. Once arriving to Aramberri you should get gas. The water and river here near La Chingada is beautiful.
On the way we had to make a welding repair and stopped along a gorgeous highway. In the evening the Guardia Nacional stopped by us and said it was dangerous and to get to town.
Once arriving in La Chingada they said lots of people come to drink and it can be dangerous so since we have kids and dogs they lets us park inside the park without paying. It was much nicer in the parking and we will be going back out next week.
We don’t buy into the Mexico fear too much. We have been driving around for 2 years now. That was our first encounter with the Guardia Nacional
Report Check-InWanted to add, in case anyone is tempted by my glowing report of El Salto and La Chingada - the road south from Galeana is a dream. The one west via La Encantada was a total rocky rutted nightmare - 3 hours to do 40km, only just made it. I highly highly recommend backtracking via Aramberri if yo want to get from General Zaragoza to Matehuala!
