Description

Absolutely gorgeous spot along beautiful river with shady live oaks and singing birds! Kicco (kisso) Wildlife Area has quite a few campgrounds. This one, Town of Kicco was once a town but is now an extensive conservation area. Only a few designated sites spaced really far apart but you have to get a free online permit (SFWMD. Gov or call 551-924-5310 or 1-800-250-4200) to stay here, set up a free account, and select your dates. There is a lock on the gate and the combination will be given to you with your reservation. You must cancel if you are unable to keep your reservation. 8 day consecutive stay limit. Gate keeps out any riffraff and feels safer inside. Sounds like a pain but it is a fast and super easy procedure. Most of these SFWMA areas are free and are along the great Florida Trail for hiking and camping. Pack it in and out, no trash receptacles. Keep trash intact and inside, or the nocturnal friends will tear it apart. And you will have to clean it up. Yes, you. Believe me, it is breathtaking, clean, quiet, ‘subtropical breezy’, and today there is only one other vehicle here. No light pollution at night, just a gorgeous canopy of stars. Do some stargazing. Magical!

A nice 20mph drive to get here, past Buffalo, cows, horses and thousands of bee brood hives. Love the bee keepers. Buy local honey.

Great spot, plenty of space for all size rigs. road in was smoothish but still dirt. no washouts or big puddles. cell service is spotty for att and almost nothing at all Verizon.

What a great place! No amenities, but it’s quiet, peaceful, and remote. When we came to the campground at about 4pm, there was only one other vehicle here. We saw a couple of gators. There are multiple campsites which have fire rings and picnic tables, and there is ample shade. Some campsites are along the river. Worth the drive in. Note: if you drive faster over the washboard, it feels smoother than taking it slowly. We didn’t find a privy. Unfortunately, some campers have left their trash (and waste) behind. ATT has LTE and 2 bars cellular. Overall though, a very nice remote and free place to stay.

As stated below gorgeous spot! Will definitely come back.

Online Reservation required.

I just really wanted to add you will need to go through Westgate River Ranch Resort and Rodeo. I thought I was in the wrong place but the nice lady at the guard house told me I was heading the right way. Just let them know you are camping at Kicco and they will let you in. Turn right just past the TP’s and keep on driving down the dirt road. You will come to a gate at the trailhead which requires a gate code to enter. This will be emailed to you when you make your reservation. Then drive another 8 miles through some picturesque countryside to the campsite.

No facilities so please pack in and pack out! Let’s try to keep this place available to enjoy for years to come!

Stayed here in Dec ‘21 and late Jan ‘22. It’s a great place 10 miles down a well traveled dirt/shale road. Have seen 40’+ Class A w/toad, 5th wheel, van to car/trailer. But, it is a long way down and back if a breakdown concerns you, better skip this spot. Both times I was on the water and saw beady little glowing eyes of a gator at night. He wanted nothing to do with me and quickly disappeared across the channel. The lock is tricky, I’m sure there’s a live YouTube channel of people trying to figure it out the first time. You unlock the padlock (get code when you register, changes weekly) that is preventing the handle mechanism from coming out that releases the shank that keeps the gate closed. Anyhow, smile while you curse trying to figure it out, you’re likely on camera and those that have done it are all secretly watching 🤣 (just kidding).
