important note: we came from the south towards Safah. We got stopped by a police car and a guy from the oil company. It is not allowed to use this road with a private car. The northern track is allowed.

As described by our.overland.adventures. The southern route starts at the Al Safah road at 23,0568349, 56,2438202. We tried roads that are located more south but got send away by police.
We had some difficulties finding the start of the loop around the lake as there were no clear tracks. But with a little bit of searching (getting out of the car to look for tracks after the first little sand hills) we found it and after that it was a very clear track. The zone around the lakes is super beautiful, the rest of the drive is a bit boring. Still worth it though!

Surreal spot in the middle of the desert with a big lake guarded by the tallest dunes in the area. Great sunset and sunrise spot. One of the highlights of our stay in Oman. Way nicer than Wahiba sands as the dunes are super tall here without vegetation and there is barely anyone going to the lake. Track is worse though with some corregations, especially the track coming from the north.

Track is easy to follow. Coming from the north (nicest side) there is quite a lot of soft sand. Do not try with a 2wd as there are barely any people coming here. When you come from the south the track is graded and super easy although a bit bumpy in places. You can do 80 km/h here till the oil fields, about 50-70 km from the tarmac (this is the boring bit). After the oil fields the track becomes more isolated and nicer but also more corregated. You'll drive between high dunes here. Then the scenery switches between flat gravel desert and dunes until you reach the lake. If you have a 2wd this is where you should stop and turn around. 4wd cars can easily continue around the lakes and exit via the northern track.

To get around the lakes you need to take a bit of a detour (see attached screenshot) as the track is swallowed by the lake. The track we took goed from approximately this point (23.3246148, 55.6777923) behind a small (maybe temporary farm) to approximately this point (23.3513835, 55.6889442) where we camped next to some trees.
