The park includes paved parking areas and bathroom facilities. A large picnic pavilion and playground with most playground equipment constructed from natural wood and ropes round out the fun for all ages. The picnic pavilion is available for rent by calling the Watauga County Parks & Recreation office at (828) 264-9511.
In addition to the mountain trails, the Sunset Skills Area pump track, on the right as you drive into the facility, provides a scenic area to warm up. Please drive slowly and look for cyclists.

Flashlight man is a cop. There is no overnight camping here. Sign clearly says so. I’m thinking most of the people got away with it because it wasn’t obvious they were in their vehicles. My windows fog up pretty bad, so… I didn’t get to stay the night.
Report Check-InExactly as described, but no flashlight man. There was one other truck there when I arrived, but he quickly left after I parked. Very little road noise besides for the occasional jake-braking trucker. Most sound was the bugs and other nature. I thought I may have heard another vehicle at one point, may have been dreaming, but I was in my truck bed underneath the tonneau cover so no way I’d have been seen. Nice place for sure.
Report Check-InGreat spot! Quiet, nice covered picnic tables, clean restrooms (closed at dawn, opened again in the morning). We stayed one night, parked at the end of the parking lot and didn’t get bothered. I wouldn’t abuse this spot though, its already pretty good that they let people park overnight.
Report Check-InFantastic facilities, we parked at the back at the picnic place. Nobody bothered us, 5:45am trash was taken and heated bathrooms opened up. Took the MTB early morning, great trails!!
Report Check-InJust my friend and I in this parking lot last night. Someone with a flashlight (probably a cop) showed up around 2 AM and walked around our rigs. They then sat in their car for about 10 minutes before leaving. Other than that, it was a peaceful night's sleep. Bathrooms were closed when we arrived, but open in the morning. I'm guessing don't abuse this one and you'll be fine, but the same flashlight guy might eventually get tired of people sleeping here. Who knows. 😅
