Chile -> Bolivia
Easy and fast procedure. Very friendly officers.

Chile --> Bolivia

We tried to cross the border as foreigners with a Chilean car. They wouldn't let us pass. The Chilean aduana told us it was even illegal that we've been to argentinia before. We discussed 2 hours but we couldn't cross. They even told us that we are not allowed to bring a Chilean car outside of chile because of drug smuggling (kind of accused us). Stupid people you can't discuss with.

Easy and quick! boarder crisdung in total was about 2h-2,5h, but only because of queue up of two busses!

Report Check-In

Impossible to cross the border if you are foreigners with Chilean plates, law from 2016. ( even with declaration jurada y padrón under our names).
Don't do the same mistake than us, only possible to leave Chile trough Argentina ( refer to law).
We didn't know and have to go all the way back.
For others : very small town with one restaurant/hotel. People are very friendly and the place is safe to camp if needed.
All the best!

Report Check-In

Just adding going in to Chile, they were super friendly, but inspected our camper very thoroughly, all the cupboards. Let us keep milk, but took eggs and honey. (Also, no meat, no veg, no fruit)

Report Check-In

Chile to Bolivia - We crossed the border with the chilean car we bought (so, with chilean plates) as a french couple (after a fail at the Colchane border).
It took us about one hour and a half. It's not a big border and everyone was very nice with us at the chilean side as well at the bolivian side. We had to show our passeports and for the car, the padron of the ancient owner of the car and the compra-venta vehiculo, poder especial y autorizacion salida de vehiculo, declaracion jurada notarial (we made all this documents when buying the car with the notary) and the international insurance. We didn't had to show the vaccines certificate but the two Indians in front of us had to.
Coming from the chilean side, dont wait behind the trucks, but go directly to the office. We had to go first to the chilean PDI then go back to the first building to get the Salida y Admision temporal de vehiculo. Then we drove a little to the bolivian side : first migrations, then papers for the car and very quick search of what was in the car (to be honest, absolutely useless) and our backpack went on the scanner. You have to declare your luggages online but there is open wifi. It went well for us.

Don’t go on thursday. A very very unfriendly man wont let you in even if you have a Chelean owned car with padron.

Traveling into Chile
Everything was very easy. First we got the stamp in our passports and a small white paper, which is important to keep. After we had to fill out a declaration form and go to the aduana to get the TIP for our van. And the last step was the check of the inside of our car. The guy looked quickly in our cabinets, the fridge and in the back ouf our van for fruits, veggies and honey. We could keep the milk we had. It took about 30 minutes.

Report Check-In

Surprisingly smooth border crossing Bolivia - Chilr. We arrived from Bolivia at 5 pm on a Wednesday (6 pm Chile time with time change). We had filled out our profiles on the mevacuno website however it is no longer needed. First showed our COVID vacc certificates, then got passports stamped by the friendly official. We needed to give him a name of hostel/hotel/lodge where we are staying. Next drive up to have the agriculture inspection. As others had written before they took fruits, veg, honey, little cactus branch decoration we had since Mexico and a tiny cactus plant. We weren't surprised with that. Then we waited while they prepared the tip. They missed the last digit of our VIN, so hand wrote it on when we pointed it out. We were in and out in less than an hour and headed to park across from the ollague municipal bulling for the night and the free wifi reached the camper!

Recommendation to enter chile:

First go to https://mevacuno.gob.cl/

Open an account (easy: just your mail with a password).
Then check your mail just to valid your account.

After that you go back to your account, look in the left column an option called “declaración de viaje “ or something like that and you fill info about where you will stay (just look for a hostel address anywhere). You will receive the confirmation in five minutes to your mail.

YOU DON’T NEED TO GET YOUR MOBILITY PASS by digitalizing your vaccination card to enter to Chile. But if you will stay a week or more in Chile do it as it is asked for shoppings and some closed spaces. This takes 48 hours (as we are staying for three days we didn’t do it).

From Bolivia to Chile:

Chile side was fast but the border
with most requirements. They asked the c19 form (you can show the image in the phone). Then we filled a health form. After that they made us a fast antigen free test. Then the passport and finally the car (tip free and no insurance required). Here is nowhere so you cannot change money.

Bolivia -> Chile
Chile entrance form done within 48 hours of entering
https://c19.cl/#/
Stamped out of Bolivia at migración. Blue building closest to Chile.
Aduana asked us to fill out an exit form, cancelled TIP gave back the passport, good to go.
We printed the Chile entrance form at the shack, there is no internet out here so make sure to fill it out before and download the file (we think it needs to be printed).
Head into Chile. We parked in front of the trucks at migración.
Head to aduana de sanitario (blue and white shack), they want the Chile entrance form. One of us had to take a free COVID antigen test.
The testing center is in the migration building.
Over to aduana sanitario for the results after 20 minutes.
Back to migración to stamp into Chile. They wanted to see the paper from the sanitario, our car title and registration while stamping in. We got 90 days (USA)
Head over to aduana, the driver needs passport, paper with VIN and plate. We gave the title and registration
Fill out declaration form. This is when you declare pets if you have them. They were excited to see our papers. We did a Bolivian export form at Veterinarian Safari in La Paz. He certified the rabies vaccine, made sure they were up to date on parasite, flea and tick medicine. It was expensive at 800bob each but he really did everything for us. You only have ten days before the health certificate expires, and 30 for the export papers.
Driver gets the TIP, it’s time to check the car.
The pet woman came to see the pets, gave them a pet and started checking in cabinets. Asked if I had food I said I don’t have produce. She didn’t check all the cabinets but saw the dog food and didn’t say anything.
Open our storage area and asked about a tote, told him it’s for camping. Nothing needed to be taken out
Said thanks so much and we are in Chile!
Started at 5:30pm and finished at 7pm. We paid nothing at the border.

The guy with the migration was super friendly and it was really fast the guy that checked her car for agriculture took our uncooked eggs took our Chia seeds and took our popcorn that we traveled with all the way from Alaska this country is a joke be careful

We aren’t even into chili yet because we pulled up to the customs and they say because the road is shut down 50 km we are not allowed to enter the country I can’t even write how many bad words I Want to say about chili and we’re not even there yet.

Report Check-In

We crossed from Chile to Bolivia, they will not let you enter Bolivia with ONLY a poder! If you don't have the Padron yet you either need a Bolivian version of the poder, drafted at the Bolivian consulate (previous owner needs to be present though) or you need an apostille for your chilean poder.
The apostille can only be obtained at the ministry of Justice of the region where you've drafted the poder (probably Santiago for most). Only the office in Santiago can give out apostille for documents drafted in other regions.

We had the apostille, some initial discussion / confusion as they are not super familiar with the document and prefer a Bolivian poder, but all in all we passed in only 30 minutes on the Bolivian side and about 10 minutes on at the Chilean aduana.

Friendly, helpfull staff on both sides.
We were not asked to payment.
No one bothered to check inside our car.

Report Check-In

Checking out in Bolivia took us 2 minutes. In Chile they are more suspicious, but still friendly. They gave us 90 days Visa, but we had to open all of our bags, they checked everything and asked for the prices of several items. We travel by bicycle. We read that bicycles are usually not checked, but seems that we had bad luck. We told them that we had apples, bananas and milk in our luggage. Milk was no problem, but we weren’t allowed to keep the fruits, so we ate them. The lady from the border control took the garbage.

Afterwards we camped at the Baños Públicos, hot shower, electricity to charge mobile phones, public Wifi, friendly locals, everything for free.

Report Check-In

Easy crossing. Exit out of Bolivia took a few minutes.

Entering Chile is, as comments state, a longer process due to the vehicle check but it wasn't difficult.

They do make a pretty thorough check of the car though - made us take everything out of the back, even opened pots and pans, and made us remove the cover from our roof top tent (first time in 15 borders). Oh and they did have a dog present.

In terms of food, if it's already cooked you can cross with it. We weren't sure but took the chance and cooked all our veggies, meat, eggs etc. They confirmed if it's cooked it's ok. Didn't take our dairy stuff as it was pasteurised.

Report Check-In

Chile to Bolivia:

We are foreigners with a Chile plated vehicle and RUT numbers. Our Padron is still in the previous owner’s name as we only purchased the vehicle two weeks ago.

To cross, we needed

1) anotaciones vigentes (which we didn’t have with us and purchased online at registro civil Chile, the Chilean was nice and printed it for us)

2) RUT paper

3) declaration jurada saying you will return the vehicle to Chile

4) Autorización from the previous owner which allows the new owner to cross.

5) Permission from the Bolivian embassy to cross with the vehicle. We didn’t have this, but we were able to get through by showing the compraventa (bill of sale) showing the previous owners name and my name. The officer kept original copies of all of the documents above except the RUT.

The Chilean officer warned us that we would be harassed by the Bolivians and not allowed to pass without permission from the embassy. He told us not to pay a bribe and if they threaten us in any way to return to Chile for our safety. We were a bit concerned as we had had similar problems in Bolivia previously (without a car) however today both the Bolivia and Chilean immigration officers were very friendly and professional.

They didn’t check us for food or anything.

It’s a beautiful route to travel.

super easy crossing, very friendly staff, esp the aduana guys. going from Bolivia into Chile in Chilean car.

Report Check-In

Two kiwis in a US registered van who speak no spanish, going from Chile to Bolivia... but everyone, staff and other border crossers, were super friendly and helpful. We followed these steps for our exit from Chile (Bolivian Aduana and Migracion approx 3 kilometres down the road):
1. Parked outside the Aduana office but walked through the gate and past the toilets to the Migracion office (There is only one office for exiting and entering Chile). Handed over our passports, the piece of paper they gave us when we entered Chile (they kept this) and the vehicle registration document.
2. Went back through the gate to the Aduana office and gave the officer the vehicle TIP. She came out to the van checked the registration plate matched that on the TIP, lifted the gate and waved us through. (She kept the TIP.)
Took 45 minutes at most, even though at Migracion we were behind a bus full of people entering Chile.

Chile to Bolivia. Aduana very strict, the woman didn't want to let us pass (foreigners with Chilean car and Chilean ID but only *temporary residence*). Her colleagues (mid aged and older male) were more relaxed and convinced here, actually checking and reading out the laws!

Report Check-In

We had a smooth crossing. A friendly SAG man checked our car but even let me keep my milk for my morning cappuccino ;-) No dog today. Mind that if you come late they close at 6 pm but that is 5 pm Bolivian time!

Report Check-In

WARNING! The control by SAG, that is control for agricultural products, is very strict here. We had 2 tomatoes, 3 carrots and 1 onion in the fridge. The very harsh SAG lady said that this was against Chilean law, no matter that this was for breakfast today and we just forgot about that (The fridge was even out of order). She filled in a "citation" to the SAG office in Calama for the next working day, where we had to appear at 9:30 am. There we were asked to explain in writing why this was in the fridge. In the case that our explanation was convincing, we will get an email from the SAG lawyer within 50 days that we will not be fined the 250 USD, which could be due.
So don't follow recommendations of others to let them find something!
Just FYI: The car of some guys from the UK, who were there at the same time, was not only checked by an officer, but also by a dog.
Don't forget to dispose of the coca leafs. They should not be taken along to Chile.

Report Check-In

Cant cross to bolivia here because of the aduana. They wont let you pass with a chilean car if you are not chilean or have a cedula d'identitad chilean with a certificate of residence.

update : we came back one day after, and there was another officer much kinder, younger and english speaker who convinced the first one to let us pass with only la declaration jurada, padron and passport. So he made as he said a big exception after another 30min of talking. You still can try your luck they are switching teams every two weeks as I understood.

Report Check-In

As foreign owners of a Chilean car on tourist visas, we were blocked from exiting after some hours of desperate discussion. Apparently you need to be a resident of Chile to exit temporarily with a Chilean car. We had a declaración jurada stating that we promise to bring the car back to Chile within 180 days but the officer wouldn't accept it.
We've read and re-read the clause regarding temporary exit of Chilean vehicles from Chile to Bolivia and there is an unfortunate error in section 17 which essentially leaves Bolivia out and invites a lot of space for interpretation.

Did the boarder crossing with our chilean car a couple days ago. Best border crossing since ever ... 20 minutes, helpfull and friendly. Go to thy guy with grey hair at the aduana - relaxed funny guy!

Report Check-In

Passed this border today to Bolivia with our Chilean car. No problems at all. Quick check at migracion and quick at Aduana as well. No problems here. Just a warning that there are some strikes going on on the Bolivian side and if it gets to dangerous, we should return. Very friendly and helpful.

You can exchange money at the store nearby, where you can buy petrol also. Just ask the people around here and they will know the place.
Procedure is fast, guys are truly friendly.

From Bolivia - to Chile. Really easy, nice guys. You don't have to pay anything and don't need insurance in Chile. They checked our car with the dog, looked inside, asked us if we had meat. We declared our spicies but they didn't care about that. You can't cross with fresh vegetables, fruits and other things like other overlanders said. It took us maybe 20 mn.

Report Check-In

Very convenient and fast border crossing. First clear the immigration and than to aduana (aduana is the first building you see coming from Chile). Took us about 30 minutes, no payment necessary, looked in the car but not very thourough. Had no problem at all to cross the border with Chilean car, only showed RUT and padron.

Report Check-In

If you are crossing with a dog:
Your certificado médico should indicate the dates the rabies vaccine was administered (for dogs over 3months, 1 year maximum) and also the dates the desparatisation was administered. In our case our dog from USA had a 3 year rabbies vaccine no vet would vaccinate her , but chile is very strict so ask a vet to give you a False date so you can enter. At this point we might not enter chile because we were honest

Report Check-In

They didn't let us inside the country because the Senasag certificate didn't indicate the rabies certificate was less than a year old, and it wasn't on the certificate de salud either. Now have to drive to the Argentinian border!

Report Check-In

People that are going to Chili and that are traveling with pets (Dogs or cats) read this! Very important before going to the border, your pet need to be seen by a vetenerian. He will give you a certificado de examen clínico de salud. But you also need the certificado zoosanitario para animales de compañía given by the SENASAG. That certificat needs to be done in the 10days before crossing but it can not be done at the border, we had to go back to Potosi to do it! On that certificat need to be writen the vacination for rage (date of vacination, product name, vigencia(how long is it good for), N° of lot or product and the dosage given. It also need to specify the antiparásito interno y externo (date, product name, dosage and vigencia(good for one month). The serelogico (blood test) is not manditory. Be ready with all the papers because you will be in the middle of nowhere and will have to go back 450km to Potosi (the office is located near the nueva terminal, in front of the Escuela Kenny Prieto, in Potosi). There is other SENASAG office in Bolivia but not at Uyuni. And you can not bring dog food or anything organic to Chili...

Report Check-In

They will take things like dried beans (chickpeas, lentils), butter, eggs (allowed to bring if boiled and not raw), peppercorns, honey, dried oregano, Chía seeds, etc as well. But they're very friendly and fast here, and have a beautiful Labrador!
