Description

OK, just a warning - this is a well known area for corrupt police. Yes, they have proper uniforms and permanent offices on the roadside. They are professionals. Whatever they pull you over for will feel legitimate. For us it was not having headlights on during the day. BUT - in no circumstances are police allowed to collect on-the-spot fines in Argentina. No matter what the threat or offer of a discount, take the ticket and drive away. These guys are so confident they have name badges and I'll let you take photos of them. The usual 'I don't speak spanish' excuse doesn't work here. If you really think you have done the wrong thing take the ticket to a police station and pay there. They threatened future confiscation of our vehicle when we crossed the border if we didn't pay, but we're later told they can't enforce anything outside of their state, so this can't happen. We felt stupid to have paid, as there are many forums discussing this subject - so please tell everyone so no other travellers get ripped off with this well-known scam!
