Description

Stupid hillibillies shooting with big loud guns.
Avoid this place!!

a peaceful secluded piece of BLM land accessable by 2-WD (keep momentum through sandy sections). an unpaved road that leads to many informal camping spots. at the base of a few hills located within 10 miles of a main road. occasionally can hear cars driving in the distance. this spot looks heavily visited due to a section against the hill scattered with "art" and casings. highly recommend as a camping option when the joshua tree national park is full. it is March 8, 2020 and I arrived in the middle of the night. watched the sunrise made coffee now playing guitar. not a soul in sight. please remember to "leave no trace" we can all do our part.

Report Check-In

Great little spot to camp. Was quite and had a nice view of stars and city lights. Drove up in a sedan with no problems, but be aware of sand

Report Check-In

Perfect for an overnight. Not a soul in sight. Two bars 5G for Verizon. No problem in our 2WD Transit.

Report Check-In

Meh. Shooting range is really trashed, locals were coming up and down the road at 10-11pm to go fire fully automatic rifles at the range, sounded like a war zone. We moved away from the range the second night, but were still solidly on BLM land but had a woman yelling that we were on private property early in the morning. I went back to sleep because I knew we weren’t on private property and didn’t feel too threatened but it was annoying.

Beautiful view of the valley and 29 Palms especially in the evening.

Report Check-In

We spend a quiet night. The shooting range activities stopped by 6pm. Not too trashy. With a little effort the place could be clean

Report Check-In

surprisingly little trash. we stayed a tad further down the road than marked location. some folks were shooting against the hills for a little bit in late afternoon. some folks unloading ATVs right at entrance. otherwise totally silent and alone. did not hear ATVs. sun just popped over the ridge for a beautiful day.

Report Check-In

Quite nice, little garbage around. Didn’t drive to the marked point, been all alone without any issues and had a quiet night. Just keep away from the shooting range (and dump) close to the painted rock. People like to play with their guns, even in the dark…

Report Check-In

Great spot right next to Joshua Tree N.P., only problem is locals came about 10 am to target practice about 200-300 yards away in what looks as a popular range site. Follow the road up hill about a mile or 2 and you can get away from the shooters noise with some good sites. Road is sandy, my 4 wd 30 foot RV made it no problem.

Report Check-In

At 2:30 AM somebody in an old pickup decided to park directly behind me and walk up to my vehicle to shine a light into my window. I happened to be awake and saw them approaching and it seemed they were out trolling for people staying in vehicles with bad intentions. They were driving down the dirt road slowly with a light looking for people in the middle of the night. I thought because of so many good reviews I'd be safe here. It was not safe. Don't stay alone. I'm lucky I was in a large enough pullout that I wasn't completely blocked in by this person and have a vehicle that can handle speeding out of here. I'm told by friends after the fact that 29 Palms is not a safe area. Avoid avoid avoid.

Report Check-In

There are plenty of spots along the dirt road to pull off that are flat and solid. As others have said it is sandy so check the ground before pulling off the road. we didn't drive all the way to the marker but pulled off into a flat spot around 400 feet after the illuminated makeshift graveyard (?)

Report Check-In

Decent access road but some areas of sand. Keep moving and should be fine. Further you go the sandier it gets. Great Verizon 5G. Better than staying in the dry lake on the north of 62. Nothing great to look at but it's good for overnight and close to JT. Few to no vehicle traffic midweek. Yours to enjoy protect and keep clean!

Report Check-In

Great spot to camp for free during our time visiting Joshua Tree. You can really camp anywhere that you can find a spot. It opens up to a ton of small dirt roads the farther out you go. Nice area with lots of level camping spots.

Report Check-In

The main road is fine, but very sandy to pull into any spot, and there's no easy way to turn around. We both got our 2WD sprinter vans stuck, and did not spend the night after digging ourselves out. Be careful!

This site is also right next to a shooting range

Report Check-In

absolutely no need to drive into the wash. stay on the road, pick a "site" right or left and the chance to get stuck is zero. great possibility to have a quiet night just outside joshua tree.

Report Check-In

Quiet Wednesday night, rolled in after sunset. You can go farther down gold park road if u have 4x4. Saw a few cars parked on the way in :) Enjoy!

Report Check-In

Spent one quiet night. The road was sandy and camp sites in the wash are certainly not recommended w/o 4x4. Target practice ended late and started early.

Report Check-In

BE CAREFUL! We pulled off into a wash and got stuck in the sand. Had to get a tow out of there. The tow truck guy told us that he pulled someone out 50ft from us the day before, so just be careful where you park up. We’re driving a 2WD Ford E250. Better if you have 4WD!

Report Check-In

While driving through looking for a spot came across someone in a Ford Transit stuck in the sand in one of the pullouts. It looked okay to drive on, but was obviously deceiving! Be extremely careful out there! Three of us worked to try to get the van out, but she finally had to call for a tow. It was dark by the time her van was pulled out, so we opted to leave and find something else rather than risk the same fate.

Report Check-In

This one might be better for a 4-wheel drive. The road is very sandy, and the pull-offs even more. I got stuck a couple of times. Once, I needed help from a passing traveler to pull me out.

Report Check-In

Beautiful BLM land almost in Joshua Tree National park. It is a dirt road a few miles away from the visitors center coming from Twenty nine palms. Lots of places to camp and it is quiet with a gorgeous view of the stars!! It is a bit sandy, but accessible with 2 wheel drive.

Report Check-In

Went a little further down Gold Park Rd and found a spot that tucked away nice with a campfire rock ring. As previous reviews state, great place to camp in BLM land if Joshua Tree campsites are full
