Description

Near Alamogordo on the way to Cloudcroft, no signs saying no overnight parking. There are a couple of pulloffs here (4?), first one is fairly level, I'm in a skoolie. Views are spectacular. I walked down the steep hill to see if there were any other spots, didn't see anything but the road is wide and well maintained, met a couple of dirt bikes. Some road noise but not horrible. Manageable Verizon signal.

I stayed at a pulloff just up the road from steep hill. Pretty quiet until morning but still not bad. it wasn't very level but I was so sleepy I didn't care. Beyond beautiful views. Good signal

Nice quiet spot. Pretty views………. ………………….

Report Check-In

Was fine in my small SUV, a bunch of spots along the road on the ridge. When you turn off 82, go left at the fork (down the less established road that goes up the ridge). Pretty cold and windy in early December.

Turned on to Steep Hill Road. There is a sign that says road closed to thru traffic, but there is a little road right to the left! Take that road for several pull off spots. We were the only ones here, so it was really very private. Close to the interstate but not much noise. Gorgeous views.

Like others, I also stayed in a site accessed by Steep Hill Rd off 82. Road is a bit rough (round rocks maybe the size of tangerines) but accessible by normal vehicles. Be sure not to overstay because I think all of the sites are in plain view of 82 as it winds around.

Some litter left by casuals, and at least one deer carcass. Site had an existing fire ring but not all did. Very close to Alamogordo for reprovisioning runs. Some scrub trees but none tall enough to block rooftop solar. Some noise from the road but not bad. Quite windy when I was there. Ground is quite rocky which will thwart cat-holers.

This is one of those rare sites where I got excellent Tmo and zero Verizon. Not boosted, but Tmo is in an LTE router.

Report Check-In

The pull off is a little sketchy especially in a 26ft rv but we did it! Stayed the first night on the risen gravel section on the right, then moved to a campsite with a fire ring after. Take the little turnoff up the hill- make the first left turn and go down that gravel road… there’s lots of spots.

Had to get creative with leveling my vehicle using stones because it's not very even but once I got it, this place was amazing. Two neighbors but I think 4 spots total so still room.

Report Check-In

As advertised, great views easy to get to if you access from hiway 82, dodgy coming in from the other direction. I'm not sure my Promaster would have been able to deal with the gravel and incline. So, careful how your nav brings you in.

Report Check-In

Really easy to find and pull into, even in the dark. Places to park start a minute off the main road. Sites slightly sloped, but the views in the morning more than make up for it. Very good Tmobile signal.

Great spot. great views. multiple sites. kinda close to the HWY, but didn't bother us.

Report Check-In

Really awesome views, much better than the options at lower altitudes, yet not too high to get altitude sickness. Definitely more than a few private spot options. Minor annoyance of target practice going on across the canyon. Verizon very slow, T-Mobile better. Highly recommend!

Good spot for a night. Made it here fine in a Prius. Gravel road. Solid service on Verizon. Sometimes going in and out. One other van joined me in the evening. Plenty of space to park a few cars

Nice sunset, nice view of the valley, quiet.

this was a nice little pull off on a dirt road, very close to the paved road that goes through the national forest. there were 2 other skoolies and a vanner here, very popular place! the sunset was so beautiful from here. not very loud noise from cars but there was someone shooting almost all night.

Report Check-In

decent spot for a night! a few spots at the top to park. we fit our 24ft rv in no problem!

cons: there is a lot of poop around as well as a dead carcass of an animal.

pros: beautiful mountain views and fairly quiet.

Report Check-In

Dirt road pull off on the mountain pass, access road for utility trucks and some other people down the hill. We parked just at the top of the road where it was flat and left space for trucks to pass around. Some traffic at sunrise/sunset on this road. Kinda trashed and some cow carcasses scattered around, so not a spot to hang outside, but had no trouble spending the night.

Beware it could be extremely windy if you choose the wrong night. Just check the wind forecasts on wundergound and you’ll be fine.

Report Check-In

Didn’t stay because it was too windy and stinky. There’s trash everywhere, animal poop and a dead carcass. I stayed at Three Rivers Campsite instead
