Established dispersed camping site under USFS lookout tower (fenced and locked). Main area with fire pit with grill and table, and another spot with a fire ring closer to the tower. Very buggy in early September, but quite nice with a screen house. There are a couple other dispersed camping sites further past turn off for Sugar Camp Tower, which are visible on Google Maps satellite view. Roaring River State Park is a couple miles down the valley and has a nice trout stream and hatchery with beautiful water, as well as a section of river near the campgrounds for swimming and wading.
Why? By checking in after you’ve visited a place you let others know this place is still functional. You can also add or correct any information.
Is as others have said; one note however, this is one of the parking spots for OHV users, so might be a little crowded on nice weekends. I got here just as most were leaving, so not an issue.
Report Check-InGPS took me to the loop across the road. Another basically under the tower quiet.
Report Check-InTwo spot near tower. One secluded spot at the trailhead.
Good art and Verizon network.
A forest service fire tower
there is a cleared area around the tower and a picnic table.
there is plenty of room to camp.
This place is just alright. It’s free.
I had no problems during my night here. There’s not much to it. No view. Nothing exciting. The fire tower is pretty cool. Secret... there’s an opening in the fence corner that you can make your way through to climb the tower. Be careful of the obvious breaks in the boards, but I watched a killer sunset above the colorful trees. That was unique, but otherwise, this place is nothing special. It is safe, free, and quiet though!!
