Description

Wild camping spot in the state forest with a lot of pine trees. We didn’t hear a single car the entire time. The road to get here is packed sand but getting into the site has quite a bit more sand. We don’t have 4x4 on our transit but made it just fine hugging more solid ground with our drivers side wheels.

The Verizon signal is meh but works on and off. Very quiet, and it looks like there are some trails here as well. We saw a few other dirt road extensions getting here where there may be more camping. There also appears to be a large clearing around the bend from here on Google satellite images that may be suitable for camping.

We camped there for one night. Really quiet place. When we arrived we got stuck in what locals calls sugar sand. The car (Elentra gt) was stuck to the frame. By chance the only car that passed that night was a jeep and two friendly locals helped us to get out of there. I would advice to not go there with a small car.

Fifteen minute drive down a sandy road, 4wd preferred but we made it in our transit connect with fwd. The road was pretty packed down but there were moments of losing traction. The weather was ideal, so maybe after a big rainstorm it would look different. It’s also another five minute drive to the Batona campsite, which you can reserve spots at online, with fire rings and water etc and I think is $5pp per night.

It sits right on the Batona trail which is a 50 mile trail that runs the length of Wharton state forest. We went on a hike to Apple Pie hill took a few hours and was really beautiful and wild.

This camp spot at these gps coordinates is right off the road, big and open. It can fit a few cars and we were the only ones there in March on a Sunday/Monday/Tuesday. But I could see this spot being popping mid-season. There was a pseudo-fire pit and some cool trails to walk down.

If you keep going down the road toward Batona campground there’s a pull off to the right with a few more spots before you hit the bridge.

We felt like we were in the middle of nowhere, it was super peaceful and quiet, just a few jeeps drove by on Sunday afternoon because the sandy road sets it off the main highway quite a bit. Definitely the best dispersed camping I’ve found so far near philly, only an hour away. Also recommend stopping by The Evergreen dairy bar on route 70, 10/10 chili dog.

Overall, great spot, serious gem.

Stayed at Batona campground which cost $10 for non residents. Two other people in RVs. Easy connect to Batona trail for a quick hike.

1 bar LTE on and off for T-Mobile. Has two put toilets with a bit of toilet paper which was nice

stayed there last night and it was incredibly quite. as mentioned, it’s sandy but i pulled a lil teardrop trailer into a spot with a Subaru Forester (no 4x4) and had zero problems. cell coverage was literally one bar Verizon. when i was sitting in my car, i somehow got it to stream the Simpsons for a few episodes. but once i was in my trailer, it was zero coverage. it was odd to stream anything cause i couldn’t even send a text message before that. so that’s why i was surprised. zero bars TMobile however. some hikers/bikers started to show up at 8am for the trails. overall, it’s an incredibly quite space in the forest and i would stay here again. i would not try to get anything bigger than a Class B or small trailer like mine back there though. no place to turn around.

Stayed one night with no issues. Like previous posters mentioned it is pretty sandy so we chose to stay in one of the first pull offs not far from the main road just in case since it had recently rained. No one came by all night but you could hear some road traffic but it wasn’t too bad. Super cool place, the pines were dense! Some trash was left from previous campers- remember to pack it out!

There are a ton of spots in here. Some are tent camping by permit only but that’s in a designated area. Tons of pull off of all sizes throughout the road. Tons of walking and hiking trails. The road is sand and can get loose at times so be aware of that. Great spot.

Report Check-In

No traffic at all during the entire stop (7pm to 8am).

Great place to camp! Especially in a van or tent. Super quiet. Only one here. Lots of places to pull off to park and camp. There’s a little water with a bench and lots of camp fire pits. I 10/10 suggest making your way down the sand trials into the woods! Also rumor has it the jersey devil resides out here so we’ll see ...

Great spot. I had no problem getting my short bus down the road. Many little spots to camp. Verizon was not working.
