Saudi Arabia
You can camp near the walls that are build around east and south of the crater. It was a bit windy but nice place to set up your tent. The guy at the visitor centre is very friendly like most people in Saudi.
Why? By checking in after you’ve visited a place you let others know this place is still functional. You can also add or correct any information.
You still can not go down in the crater because no oxygen. The visitor center is definitely closed (police decision said the guy). Beautiful view however. Lot of wind.
Report Check-InDue to strong winds and a sandstorm the friendly pakistanian security let us park directly behind the visitor center. So there we were protected by the wind. Normally you can park everywhere.
Report Check-InYou can park and spend the night on many places at the edge of the crater with a beautiful view. Internet is available. !!Be very careful: there are dangerous gases in the crater. People have already died. Don't go down.
Report Check-InBeautiful spot to camp! As said before can be a bit windy. We pitched our tent in one of stone picnic areas. On the edge of the crater. No problem for the friendly Pakistani guard at site.
Report Check-InCamped at the mountain near the crater because it was more wind protected. But you can camp everywhere around the crater. Gravel road leads around the crater. No 4wd needed, but a little bit of ground clearance.
The view from the picnic spots is very beautiful.
Police came by at our campspot twice to check if everything is okay. Security guy at picnic area.
You can drive around the crater and camp anywhere. Best views are near the picknick buildings/parking lot and on the opposite site of the crater. I think it’s possible to take a 2WD along the track, especially when driving clockwise you’ll get quite far.
Currently it is not allowed to descent into the crater because 2 people died last week. Unclear how long this will last. Security and police check on this. You can still walk around the rim of the crater.
