Description

The museum is currently closed and undergoing renovation... we were not told when it will be open again.

Entrance is free, but they expect a fee. Good guide and interesting things to see about slave trade, voodoo and the link between Benin and Brazil. It's inside the formal Portuguese fort. I was guided by Oscar, who speaks English well.

Latest Check-Ins

the fort/museum is still close. renovation is far from done. we made a unofficial visit. we asked the guy with the security basecap if it's possible to take a short look inside. after a few words it was possible and we got more than we expected. we got a construction side tour. very interesting. the big museum is complete empty, so it would take time. the plan is to show models of the 26 slavery ships. the building for the cafeteria has to be tear of, because after visiting by the president he decides that the first design was not good enough. they began in 2021 with the construction and it was planned for 2 years. but there is a lot of work missing. only two rooms were ready and we're lovely equipped. the new museum will even have and wheelchair accessible Elevator. we gave 6000 as a tip and we were very lucky to give that, as he was. if you were around try your luck. asking doesn't cost anything.

Report Check-In

Just an update that they're still closed but renovations are done. Should open to the public soon.

Report Check-In

Closed because of restorations. The country is building 4 museums and restorating a lot of sites in 2022. "La porte de non retour" is also closed for the moment.

Report Check-In

1000fcfa for the entrance for the strangers.

Not very interesting. We took a French guide, but we didn’t feel like we learned or gained anything from it, and the tour took a long time. Also, the employees were incredibly rude to us at the end. It was weird. Even without that jarring part of the experience, would not recommend. Even though we didn’t enjoy it so much, were going to leave a small tip before they literally yelled at us. If you do go, note that you do not have to pay for anything. And you are totally allowed to go through without a guide.
