This is one of several designated camping areas in the Red Rock Ranger District.
Camping is not permitted outside these areas.
Why? By checking in after you’ve visited a place you let others know this place is still functional. You can also add or correct any information.
There are very few designated campsites on this road. Most were too full. We found a spot at this one, but we are all on top of each other. This is probably the worst campsite we’ve ever stayed at. We are camped next to a dirt pile. It’s also very noisy because of ATVs zipping around the campers. This is our first time to Sedona, but we won’t be staying long. It’s too bad. We really wanted to see the area. The forest service needs to open up more designated campsites. It’s ridiculous.
Report Check-InGreat spot with amazing views. Only a few other campers on a Thursday night in the winter. Temperatures were cold and snow was still on the ground. We were in a sprinter and had heat so an easy place to stay. Two portables were clean.
Report Check-InOn the weekend this place was packed. By Monday afternoon there were only 3 RVs. But it fills up round sunset. Great views of the red cliffs and access to the parks and trails. Some passing OHVs but the wind took the dust the other way. Clean. 2 bars ATT. Easy access for any rig from both sides as long as you take it slow over the 7 km of gravel. But parking could be a problem if you arrive late.
Report Check-InWest if Sedona near the Red Rocks Secret Mountain Wilderness.
Great view, good road, portales
Well… now this place is well known. Very crowded and a few camper seams to be installed for long. Dog barking. 7 km from the high way. Very quiet at night.
Report Check-InBeautiful free dispersed camping spot, but very busy. Need to get their by mid afternoon to get a spot, otherwise you risk not getting one or being parked up with no room to spread out. Camping is only allowed in designated campsites on the forest road. Go to USFS website for specific spots.
Report Check-InBEAUTIFUL large camping area!
I was the only one back there, had the entire place to myself for three days.
Gorgeous views of red rocks all around.
2 bars Verizon 5G
The road in was really rough and muddy after the past week of rain and snow. The first campsite near the main highway was packed with RV’s and cars, and all the designated campsite lots further down were empty. I had 4x4 on all the way back and there were two really deep clay/muddy areas where I was sliding wildly. There was one area with shallow standing water. I would be careful if you’re coming back here with 2WD after recent rainfall.
Report Check-InFirst let me say this place is beautiful and comfortable. We stayed here about a week (through Christmas) and would absolutely stay again.
Really hate all the confusion over camping around here with all the mixed messages if camping is allowed or not. Thankfully, there is a sign at the very first entrance explaining where the “designated camping sites” are. Also, all along the road and at every turnout are signs that specify if camping/fires are allowed so it’s pretty self explanatory once you’re there!

Report Check-InFR 525 (Loy Butte Rd) is open for camping. many spots available during the week, weekends are packed. About 4 to 5 tour jeeps going by every day phone reception can be spotty, depending on time of day and the amount of people camping.
Report Check-InSpots for numerous vehicles. Busy, especially for a Wednesday night in February, however it’s relatively easy to access and 2 bars of Verizon.
Report Check-InBeautiful spot but expect people to be camping on top of you. We were at this site no less than 10mins and someone came and was peeing about 30ft from our door, then decided to place his tent not far off from that.
I guess this road is a good spot if you want to mountain bike or you have other toys, but if you're looking for peaceful solitude this isn't it. This is our second time trying to camp in this area, once in early summer and now in the fall and it's just totally overrun out here.
Report Check-InAwesome public land with lots of other rigs out here to make you feel right at home, but enough to space to spread out at least a bit, depending on which pullout you pick or how far you drive :) beautiful views of the red rocks
Report Check-InStayed 2 weeks here and got lots of snow. We had no trouble pulling out 30' travel trailer down the long road and into this spot when it was dry. it would be almost impossible for us wet and I had to wait for the snow to melt before we could dry. we pulled out a rented campervan with our truck when the road was muddy. This spot is much less populated than the other spots but you will still probably have neighbors. I would definitely recommend this spot it has one of the best views you can get in the area for free.
if you want to see more about this spot check out the youtube video we made about our time here. (link below)

Report Check-InI mistakenly checked in at a different location on this road but this is the one that I’ve stayed at off and on for a week. Either way they’re all very similar it’s just a matter of finding something that fits your vehicle and that isn’t too full. Very quiet and beautiful scenery and actually shockingly good T-Mobile service. I was hotspotting my phone and working on my computer and streaming video of election results while also FaceTiming. Really great service if that’s important to you.
Report Check-InSpent about a week here. Great spot. We were here with about 4 other setups but it wasn’t bad.
Report Check-InOne of many camping opportunities along FR 525 towards Palatki Ruins. Unfortunately all of them were taken from many big rigs so we had to share one site with 5 more campers, and they run their generators till 10 pm.
