Description

Hatta boarder crossing. Make sure to stop at the customs building 1km before the immigration check point to get your carnet stamped when leaving UAE. It is easy to miss as there is no gate. You can get mandarory Oman TPL insurance for your vehicle at the rest area between the border checkpoints. There are a couple of offices. We paid 250 AED for 3 month for a 12 ton camping truck at vision insurance (1 month would have been 200 AED).
On the Oman side make sure to tell the customs officials exactly where you need the CDP stamped as they are not that familiar with the process. When doing visa on arrival tell the immigration official how many days you want before. They first wanted to only give us 10 days but quickly changed it to 30.

We had no problems bringing our dog along, but did not take him out at either of the border installations.

We tried to leave UAE from Hatti’s today and the customs agents were insisting that we needed a customs declaration as well as our CDPs which was clearly BS and they wanted 125AED each for the pleasure. We told them to GTF and ride up to the crossing at Kalba, 50km away and had no problems whatsoever, and a very helpful and friendly border guard on the UAE side. I recommend that you do the same. It’s less about the money and more the principle for me!

UAE -> Oman
Since when we entered from KSA they didn't asked for Carnet, we went straight to passport control, asking them if we needed something for the car and they said no. We just paid 35,90 dirham pp exit fee, got stamped out and could proceed. In Oman without vehicle insurance they don't stamp you in, so we had to go back to the roundabout, find the place where to buy it (Ali Al Washahi customs on Google maps). 1 month 21 RO, 3 months 23 RO for a Citroen Jumper van. Then we got a free 14-day visa on arrival (European passport). No need for medical insurance or hotel reservation as you may read online. Very quick and easy. After that car check (30 seconds) and free to go (no Carnet, no paperwork at all).

This border was very chaotic when we arrived. Something we didn’t expect after all the easy crossings on the Arab peninsula. Omani side was quiet and professional, but UAE side was very full with long lines to get a visa on arrival. The UAE officers wanted money (125 dirham) to stamp the carnet. We declined. Also: the vet here is very strict, so if you want to cross this border with a pet, make sure you have all the paperwork (import for uae AND export papers from Oman).

From UAE to Oman. Easy border crossing. Took us about 1 hour and 15 minutes in total.
Make sure to stamp your Carnet at the UAE customs about 1km before the border gate (as mentioned in the other comments here on iOverlander).
Then continue to the border gate: passport control and paying the UAE exit fee (it‘s about 25€pP).
Then drive to the omani side of the border. Tuen right on the big roundabout and get your car insurance in the big yellow building (it‘s called Al Ahlia and it‘s about 35€ for 1 month).
Then go back to the roundabout and drive to the border gate: passport and visa control. Then quick customs check. The omani customs asked about our Carnet but didn‘t stamp it at the end (it‘s up to us, they said. In their opinion there is no need for a Carnet in Oman.)
That‘s it. Easy and quick ☺️
Safe travels!

Process is as described.

To get your carnet stamped out of UAE, go to the grey buildings across the street, 1km from the border. Not the one stating ’Hatta Customs Office’ but the grey gates vehicles pass through. They knew what to do, whole process was quick, and no car inspection or fees.

About 1km further is the UAE passport check. The exit fee is 35,25 dirham per passport. You can also pay in usd or euro, in both currencies the fee is 10.

Then you buy insurance near the gasstations. We paid 150 UAE dhm / 15 Oman rial for 3 months for a 2000kg Land Rover, 1 month was 120 UAE dhm.

Entry into Oman:
first the car is (lightly) checked and you get a ticket with stamp. Then on the left side of the road you get your carnet stamped. It’s one of the yellow buildings where the truck drivers also hand in papers.

Then drive 7km to immigration. Visa on arrival was easy, no e-visa needed. Paid 20 Oman rial for the 30 day visa. 10 day visa is 5 rial, and can only be extended for another 10 days. The customs ticket is stamped again here at the same office/booth. We needed to show our local insurance to get the stamp. Then exit through the gate.

There are atms at the gasstations and at immigration. They worked with maestro.
