Wild camping south of town with partial view of Guanajuato and lake. Outside of small village of Calderones. Trail starts outside of town and branch I took goes past the spur to the cell towers. A bit of off camber about 300M before this site but fine in the dry. 90% sure there is another way out of here but have not explored. Trail is easy but bumpy. Good cell service. There are many trails and many potential campsites in the area.
The track I used to find this area is called Rodeo Calderones available by registering for free on wikiloc FYI. If I remember I will add a location at the trail start and end of Google map coverage for easy navigation. So look for an additional location added for that.
Dead quiet at night. Only saw one person hiking with there dogs in 24hrs in a Thursday. Probably more crowded on weekends.

We didn’t make it to the overlook as our van is heavy and we would’ve needed 4x4 for that. But if you make it to the top of the mountain where the bumpy road has a crossing and you take a right turn you’ll have an amazing view and you can just look for a spot there.
We saw some horses there and were completely alone. In my opinion you don’t need 4WD to make it up to the mountain as locals youse this road daily to get into town with cars that look like they’re about to fall apart. And they have no issues at all.
We absolutely loved it up there so would recommend to drive up this very bumpy road it’s worth it. Bring enough food and water so you can stay a while longer!
Report Check-InWe didn’t quite make it to the spot marked here (it gets a little rough for a 2WD van), but there are numerous options for flat camping within a few hundred metres of the point. Steep dirt road to get here, but manageable right up until the final stretch!
Beautiful view overlooking the lights & hills of Guanajuato, very quiet (only saw one other vehicle, which left after sunset), such an excellent find for mainland! Enjoyed a scenic, breezy night up here.
Report Check-InGreat views, quiet, and mostly empty. Hiked in a westerly direction one afternoon, the graded road ends at a funky tire and bed spring fence, but there’s a trail that goes out to an overlook (with shrine and great views) and nearby high point.
Report Check-InWe stayed three nights. An epic place for Mexico mainland! TOP! No noises, saw some runners and dog people. Very clean!!! Please keep it like that!!
