Description

*Overnight camping/parking is NOT available at this location.
.....
This is a nice farm where you can park your vehicle while you hike to Choquequirao. It’s 20 soles for the time you leave. There is a simple bathroom and cold showers. The views from the snowy peaks are wonderful.
The road here is through a tight path and there is a little wood bridge that you must cross, a bit technical but we made it fine with our Ford e250. There is an alternative through the creek instead of over the wooden bridge but it’s through 10-15cms of water.

From what I gathered during my stay at Colmena you can no longer go inside the gate because he has built these extended steps that are right in front of the gate. I left my Kombi outside in front of the gate, which is still secure but I don’t know why you’d pay 20 soles for that.

If you would rather do a guided tour to Choquequirao, like we did, contact Dayme, the owner of this farm. He took our stuff with donkeys, cooked 3 amazing meals a day, told us incredible stories and showed us the archeological site, he is a book of knowledge. Dayme was the head of construction when they built the path to Choquequirao 25 years ago, he really knows everything that needs to be known in the area. He speaks very little English, and he is a bit deaf so speak loud and you will be fine. We almost went on our own but it was a much better experience to have a guide and really learn a lot about the area, the history and the people.

This place is no longer opened. The owner died of corona and since the place was abandoned. No where to camp.
No much place in this are a to Park and camp , go straight to the village (cachora) and sleep at « casa de Salcantay ». Super friendly place and places for cars in the courtyard.

I don’t know about in the past, but Pedro had me park outside of the gate. It doesn’t seem like you can even enter with a vehicle anymore. Also, it’s another 6kms from here to the trailhead. It took me an hour and a half walking to get to the trailhead. I know he can get you a taxi but I think it’s the same price if you were to leave your car up at the plaza of the town. Pedro and Luisa are very nice and they let me use the shower and bathroom when I came back from the hike but I’m not sure I would recommend starting the hike from here.

Report Check-In

We initially came here to leave our Van while we hiked to Choquequirao ruins, but ended up staying one more night due to the great hospitality of our hosts. The parking is 10soles per night. Luisa and Pedro are very nice people and will try to accommodate you as best as they can and make you feel at home. They also offer lodging, great food, guide services and donkeys. Also they can arrange taxi to the trailhead if you dont want to walk extra kms.
They have plenty of space for tents and a parking lot behind fence, but as mentioned before there are some high restrictions due to the gate.
The shower is currently cold but soon they will have hot shower.
The way to Colmena is quite easy, but if you're GPS doesn't know the exact way here are some directions:
follow the way from Cachorra towards Choquequirao entrance, shortly after crossing the wooden bridge you will see a sign saying "Colmena", take the turn to the right, and then drive straight, the road is easily doable with 2wd.
Once you see a gate with a bell, you have arrived, this is the last building on the road, from here the path to the ruins start. If they are not around just ring the bell, someone will come to you.

We stay here for one night before hiking to the Choquequirao, by our own.
It’s a really nice and quiet place, with really nice view.
We arrived at 7.30 pm, during the night, without booking. The owner Luisa and her brother Pedro are really friendly.
We slept outside in our tent, on a clean grass space.
On this place you will find clean toilets and cold shower.
They also have bedroom in the farm and they can provide lunch.
We paid 5 soles per tent.
Can definitely recommended !

We totally agree with the post below. We did the 4N/3D tour with Dayme, a mule and his dog Lica. We normally don’t like organized tours, but this one was really worth it because of Dayme’s enthusiasm & knowledge about nature and the history of the Region.

The hike is tough, painful at times, but doable, beautiful and certainly spectacular. We recommend to do the hike with a guide, especially with Dayme. It really helps that a mule caries your gear, incl. food. The ruins are in a beautiful location and you will probably be there by yourself. Unfortunately this will change soon, due to plans of the government to invest in a new highway and a teleferico. So please go now before it becomes the new Machu Pichu! We loved to hear more about the history of the ruins from Dayme, so you know what you are looking at. He can tell you all about the Legends and mystery’s of this site.

Don’t expect a lot of the facilities of the campsites during the trek or ’haute cuisine’ meals, but it is part of the charm and you will be exhausted anyway.

The road to Colmena is fine, easy doable with any type or car. The campsite at the Colmena Finca is situated beautifully, the only challenge is that if it has been raining and you don’t have 4x4 it will be difficult to get your rig out of the camping area, because of the steep & slippery grass at the entrance. Dayme plans to fix this in the near future.

Don’t forget to taste Tuna (cactus fruit) and have a chat with his sister Louisa and brother Pedro. Enjoy! Pachamama.
