Latest Check-Ins

I went to visit the sanctuary. looks like it is closed. waste of time to drive here. More info needs to be provided on how to visit and when it's open. Tgere is also sign on the gate that says it's closed. Asked a local guy while returning about the sanctuary he said do not pay attention to sign. Just go in and honk. I returned and did the same. A gentleman with the monkey around his neck cam out. He said the sanctuary is closed to visitors.Total waste of time to drive out.

They don’t reopen (since ?) - zero social skills to communicate „we are not interested in visitors“
Hopefully the animals doing well

They've got a baby manatee (6 mo.) named nugget now and some older ones you can watch bottle feed. Very informative tour given by one of the volunteers. Tours seem to happen at 1.45pm on weekdays, but still email or call ahead to arrange.

As previously said. Email ahead to organise a tour. They don’t currently have any baby manatees (great for the manatees, a shame for us as selfish tourists) but they had a few older ones closer to release which we watched bottle feed. They also had monkeys which you cannot get too close to, but they were showing off their acrobatics for us!
Definitely worth a trip if you are in the area, or even if your aren’t in the area if you are into manatees or interested in the work they are doing.

The road to Sarteneja is very potholed though so beware! From Sarteneja it’s maybe 15 mins, but google won’t route it because there is a small gap in the roads.

Showed up on a Saturday morning without appointment. Unfortunately the rehabilitation centre only offers tours by appointment and only in the afternoon because the mornings are busy with feeding and fostering the animals.
Still the friendly owner took some time and showed us the manatees and explained about the work they’re doing there.
It‘s definitely worth the small detour from Sardeneja but give them a ring (501) 650 6578 or write an email [email protected] to make sure that a tour is available.

They also look for volunteers, but minimum time to spend is 1 months.
