Just off a parking area on the 27 a road at rhe western edge of the parking area will lead you down bellow the main road level. It is semi hidden from the traffic depending on the hight of your vehicle and can give some protection from the wind. In addition, it served us to acclimatise for the altitude. It is possible to pitch a tent.

Good spot for a night before crossing to Argentina. You can even go down the road at the beginning of the parking so to be hidden from the road.
Military came around 7pm to know what we were doing. Very professional and kind.
Also this road from SPA to the border is all the way steep. So if your car tend to heat up take your time!
Stayed here the night before going to Bolivia. We looked at the places more out of view, but they were not very level or in a dry riverbed. So we stayed right on the big parking lot and had a quiet night, and a beautiful sunset.
Report Check-InIt is a five star spot ! Just get up there, take a sit have a beer and enjoy the sunset with a great view on the volcano Licancabur in the middle of the desert. We parked just a hundred meters down the location of the spot on a side of another dirt road.
Report Check-InLagunas route Chile to Bolivia, this was the perfect wildcamp spot to acclimatize and ensure an early start next morning. Good shelter against the wind and great views of the huge adjacent volcano and Atacama desert below. If you're cold now, better get used to it, since it will get worse.
