Forest service campground. Nice walks down to reservoir. Very spread out. Fire pits. Pit toilet at trailhead for Forsythe Canyon. Narrow dirt road/trail requiring med/high ground clearance.
Why? By checking in after you’ve visited a place you let others know this place is still functional. You can also add or correct any information.
Tried to get to the campsites at gross reservoir in a 4x4 sprinter 3500. Road is so rough we couldn’t get past the first campsite. Idk if the road has just washed out more since the last reviews we written. OnX app said the road was a 2/10 difficultly. I’d give it at least a 7/10.
Report Check-InPlenty of spots, however road is rough coming in after campsite 1. High clearance 4x4 strongly advised. lake area is very nice.
Report Check-In31 campsites spread out pretty well off a fairly maintained but high clearance necessary NF road. There’s a pit toilet at the turn off from county road 68. The road becomes fairly technical just past campsite 1. There’s a parking lot for lake access at the end of the road.
Report Check-InSome people are more daring than I am to drive these roads on anything other than a dry day. High clearance strongly suggested. 4x4 not a requirement. But be ready for washouts, ruts, washboards, etc for several miles. Then when you get to the trail head it starts getting tight/narrow (single lane, no place for a by pass). Be comfortable backing up a good distance if you are coming in the weekend!

Report Check-InOne of my favorite spots for dispersed camping near Boulder. There are 31 sites so everyone is spread out and it stays pretty quiet. If you drive all the way down to the res there are sites you can walk to and stay right next to the water.
Report Check-InThat road is no joke! I stopped (gratefully) at Campsite #1 after waving the white flag. Didn't realize the 360° beauty until all the rain stopped and the clouds parted. Light traffic going past of confident 4x4s during the day and evening, but right now that road is no place for a Promaster!
Report Check-InHigh clearance is suggested after campsite 1. the ruts in the road are a real challenge for anything less. after the first 4 or 5 roudy bits of road the path smooths out a bit. it's about 2 miles from the trail head to the water. water access will require you to Cary your equipment roughly 700ft, but in the summertime it's worth the challenge. it is a well known spot, but isolated. expect weekends to be busy.
Report Check-InHoly Spaghetti! What a ride to get there. At first we were going to turn around and stay at Forsythe trailhead, but a guy in a Honda Accord told us we should be able to get there with a 22 ft converted Bus, so we tried it. It was bumpy and we were going 5 mph, but we got there. We camped at site #2, which is not as far as the GPS coordinates says and we didn’t have a view on the reservoir, but we had a view to the Rockies and it was awesome. The stay was awesome. Just know you need nerves of steel to get there.
Report Check-InWe ended up staying at the Forsythe trailhead instead of following the Forest road down to the reservoir. Taking our 22ft long sprinter van seemed like too much of a risk with the steepness of the hills and curves further down. Trailhead was nice, enough room to park and had a vault toilet.
If you are coming from Boulder on highway 119, google maps tells you to turn onto Magnolia rd but it I s super steep and has really tight turns and thin lanes. We made it ok with our van but it was a tough drive up the mountain, we maybe would have looked into going a different route if possible.
No cell service.
