Description

Superb place directly at the Luanga with view of elephants, hippos, crocs, baboons and leopard (if you are lucky). A campsite inside the park wouldn't be any better. Popular with overlanders. USD 10/16 pppn. Three times as expensive as other places, for example bush walk USD 55 (+ park fee), spaghetti bolognaise USD 16, firewood USD 5.

Latest Check-Ins

We had a good experience here. Reading some reviews maybe we were lucky.
We were at the pitch number 9, at the end. More privacy and amazing views.
We were thinking to stay 1 night, but finally we stayed 3.
Clean showers and toilets. Good hut on each campsite to be protected from the sun with light, electricity, brai. Perfect pool to refresh. Nice staff. Wifi (slow) for free during some hours at the pool or at the reception.
And the best:
We had elephants everyday on the campsite. And hippos one night on the campsite too. And impalas, warthogs, birds...
10$ per person per night.
Take care with the baboons, like in another places too.

Report Check-In

We came back to this campsite during the high tourist season...it was hell! The campsite was overcrowded with tents stuck next to each other everywhere. From 6 a.m. people are screaming, talking as if it were midday, warming up the cars... Impossible to sleep. There are far too many people compared to the size of the campsite. Run.

Report Check-In

Apparently we have been spoilt by having smaller remote campsites mostly to our selves for the past few weeks and with perfect river views. Arriving here felt like Hollywood in comparison. We were placed 'inland' due to a full campsite (where about only half are on the river), vehicles everywhere and engines starting from 5am. I'm sure that the busy campsite is typical for the area at this time, but it was too busy and noisy for us. Otherwise a beautiful spot, great facilities although the ladies shower could have had hotter water.

Report Check-In

Amazing place. We camped here for 3 nights and had a great time. Lovely wee pool with a bar connected. A short walk from camp sites to restaurant. Steaks were nice at restaurant the burgers were quite plain but still nice enough. Ablutions ideal and fabulous shower. Free Wifi from 12-2 everyday.

Report Check-In

12usd ppn November to June and 16usdppn other months. staff very friendly. there are over 40 staff working there but I was 1 of 2 guests in May. apparently it starts getting busy around June.
elephants, hippos, warthog, baboons and antelope by the river. and I heard lions at night. there is security at night. very nice place. pizza and salad wasn't very nice from restaurant. maybe stick with more african food from the menu.

Report Check-In

Spent 2 great nights camping here. Lot more to offer then Croc Valley. $10pppn and game drive at $ 50pp excluding park fees. Clean, tidy, ablutions a bit dated but well looked after. Many employees coming around to offer services which does get annoying a little. Still AAA rating though.

Report Check-In

Established camp ground with camp sites, lodges and safari tents. Space for big rigs but the approach road is a bit tight. Sites have electric ( UK & SA sockets) covered seating area. Drinking water at taps, ablutions- hot water and clean, a bit dated. Restaurant and swimming pool on site- we paid 20 USD per night - 2 people. Baboons are the usual nuisance ( will take any food left unattended) hippo in the river and elephants stroll around

Report Check-In

A lovely campsite right on the river. Spots 6,7,8,9 the best being directly on the bank, but they're all nice really. One set of ablutions is pretty run down, the other is much better. We had hot showers every night although the lights in the bathrooms didn't work. Taps, sinks around the campsite and power at each site. There is a bar and pool at the campsite which is lovely, and you can walk to the main bar/restaurant area too about 500m. The only campsite we stayed at that had free wifi for a few hours a day! Staff were lovely and drinks reasonably priced. Hippos always around and we had elephants in the campsite and in the main area coming right up to us! As well as giraffe, impala, puku, and ofc many baboons and monkeys so keep everything locked up. $10pppn when we stayed.

Report Check-In

For us this is the best choice for self drivers! Beautiful spots with a stunning view at the river (7,8,9 and in parts 6). The Ablutions are ok and if you are lucky, there is game around. We had Elephants crossing on a daily basis and a pack of Wild Dogs not far from Camp. We stayed here for a week and can recommend it without a doubt. 10 USD pppn or 160 Kwacha.

Report Check-In

Beautiful campsite (sites 6,7,8 and 9) are directly at the river. Great hide out where we saw giraffes, elephants and warthog. Ablutions are fine, with hot water shower. You can drink from the tap.

During our stay there were also big groups camping, who where a bit loud. That is a shame, because the surroundings are beautiful and there is much to see and to hear when it's more quiet. But in overall I would definitely recommend going here!

Report Check-In

Very good campsite.
We stayed a week and recommend to go there.
Beautiful views on river with wildlife.
South Luangwa NP is a gem.
Nice swimming pool overlooking the river.
Wifi at reception. Nice staff
Ablutions are a bit old but very clean. Hot water everyday.
10USD pp pn

Report Check-In

Mitch and Yolanda were very friendly and assisted us with several questions. Clean camp, clean ablutions and site 6 7 8 have a beautiful view. Swimming pool at camp site . Wi fi at reception incl. In 10 US pppn

Report Check-In

We stayed 5 nights here and it’s a very unique place ! Beautiful sunsets on the river, a lot of wildlife around, nice swimming pool and it’s not too far from the gate for morning drives inside the park. We enjoyed it a lot

Report Check-In

We loved this place - the pitches are so close to the river with a stunning sunset view. Great lapas at each pitch with a table, and the pool is great for the kids. We paid $10 pp and $5 for kids (they mentioned it’s $12 in high season). Didn’t see much wildlife at this time of year but plenty of hippos and crocs in the river.
The ablutions are OK, clean enough, good shower flow, just poorly lit and featuring rather a lot of wildlife!
However we don’t recommend the restaurant at the lodge - very expensive and the food is nothing special.

Report Check-In

Our second visit here and…“twice the charm”! You get the feeling that you are inside the park with, undoubtedly, the best sunsets over the Luangwa River. We camped on stand 8 since 6 and 7 were already booked. All 4 riverfront stands (6-7) great but, in our opinion, no. 7 is the best as it is the largest and most shady. No. 9 is a bit small and cramped. We paid usd10 pppn (adults) and usd5 pppn (kids under 13). Pool and bar are close to camp which is a massive bonus, especially during the warm dry-season. Ablution blocks are not great, but this is not why we camp :-)

Report Check-In

Excellent location with great views over the river and for $10pppn so close to South Luangwa NP it's great value for money. bar and pool available however bar rarely seemed to be staffed and pool was a bit grubby. similar issues with bins and toilets. could arrange guided tours via reception however we contacted a guide directly which was cheaper (Standwell whose details are in the main South Luangwa NP location)

Report Check-In

We had a brilliant stay here - South Luangwa is a fantastic park and worth the visit. We went into the park over two days; once with self-drive ($30pp+$15p/vehicle).

The camp is wonderful with a small pool just for campers, bar at the pool. There are two lots of ablutions too - one lot close to sites 1&2 for larger groups, and more ablutions for the rest of the sites. Sites 6-9 are indeed river-facing, 6&7 with perhaps the best views. Each site has their own lapa/shade but.

When we were here, the river was at its lowest (peak of dry season), the hippos were roaming the banks, along with baboons, impala, vervet monkeys and elephants. Leopard walked through the main camp when we were staying at wildlife camp - we didn’t see it. Elephant also walked through camp daily and W e heard hyaena at night. Perhaps something to be aware of if you have kids.

Camping cost: $10pppn

Report Check-In

We stayed 3 nights at Croc valley (10$pp) and 2 at wildlife (13$pp). Croc valley is much nearer to the park gate, so better when gamedriving early morning until night, but was also more active, with noise from the bar until 11pm. Wildlife camp is better to spend the day, much calmer and larger view. Price are not really fixed though : 10$ in green season, 16 in peak season... but 13$ for spontaneous campers in this still empty covid time. We had elefants and baboons in both camps, swimming pool was not clean in either camps. Good ablution blocks in both. (Fresh fruit and vegs delivery by ''Thomas the gardener'', see relevant POI near Wildlifecamp).

Report Check-In

Lovely place, amazing view. Camping fee 16 usd pppn, night drive 50 usd pp

Report Check-In

Really recommend this place! Sure, the ablutions need some attention but just the best view of the sunset and the wildlife around. We watched a herd of elephant chase 2 lionesses on the opposite bank and the elephants regularly cross the river and into camp.
We had some car trouble and the camp mechanics were very willing and helped us. Lions and hyena were spotted by our neighbours the night before. Enjoy!

Report Check-In

Very nice campsite. However, only pitches 6 to 9 are located directly on the river. The place no. 6 is shady, 7 to 9 a little less shady. Place 6 and 7 seem to us to be best suited for large vehicles. No. 7 seems to be the most beautiful place to us. Some river view also from (group) places 1 and 2. Guided groups can also reserve here. The place was suddenly full of Toyotas and camping trailers and we had to give up our place by the river. So reserve in advance if you want a place right on the river.

Report Check-In

Awesome campsite overlooking the Luangwa River!

There are only 10 campsites fairly well separated so even if full it is not crowded.

Western toilets with hot hot showers, several cleaning up areas, power, braai area, table and lapa at each campsite, pool with bar (25kwa for Mosi) close to the campsite make this a special place.

Paid 10USD pppn absolutely worth it.
Also provide good mopani firewood for 50kwa per bundle and have a good resturant (9USD for a decent main course)

Their activities are a little expensive and we were not 100% impressed with their guide for the night drive however still had several leopard and lion spottings in the park.

From the campsite you have an amazing sunset view over the river where there are crocs, hippo, puku, impala, elephant and plenty of birds. We also saw wild dog 4km from the campsite on our way to the national park.

Note self drive rates for the national park are USD30 pp/day (multiple entry) plus 15USD for foreign vehicle

If you do a guided activity then the park fees are only 20USD pppd (SADC) or 25USD foreign.

Report Check-In

We spent a lovely four nights here. The view from the campsite is spectacular... particularly at sunset. The ablutions are a little dated, but were clean and the water was lovely and warm. We had elephant, hippo, giraffe, impala and even a very brief sighting of wild dog in the camp. We did both self drive and a night drive ($50pp) and can highly recommend the night drive. We saw lion and leopard on the guided drive. The only negative is the monkeys and baboons in the camp who are a bit of a pain.

Report Check-In

What an awesome campsite! Beautiful views of the river and the best sunsets! There was a lot of wildlife activity around camp. We had elephants in camp, heard lions close by, hyenas calling, the alarm calls from baboons and monkeys suggested a leopard passing through the camp early in the morning and on our last morning we saw wild dogs infront of the bar area. The staff were amazing, the best we have experienced in Zambia yet. Our 2 night stay became 4 nights as we just didn't want to leave. I will return to South Luangwa just to stay here again

Report Check-In

They don’t get many visitors due to COVID unfortunately so like many places you will have to do with the staff that sits around chatting most of the day. They are used to having the place to themselves so loud phone conversations and continuous chatting is part of it. The toilets are really not that bad, maybe old but clean and when everyone leaves the evening and night it’s just you and the animals. Marvelous place...

Report Check-In

Great location with campsites overlooking the river. Crocks and Hippos can be seen from the campsite. We heard lions as well hayhinas from the park.
Bathrooms are dirty with dust and spiderweb everywhere (can be because of covid). Campsite has a nice African bush feeling to it. You will enjoy your stay here.

Report Check-In

The reviews that describe this place as spectacular are spot on. Its great on so many levels. 10$US pppn. Village nearby for fresh vegetables at normal prices. Will return here anytime. Spend the time to meet and chat to the staff. It will heighten your experience here.

Report Check-In

Just to add: we paid 12usd pppn but having an experience of Croc Valley campsite we would recommend stay here instead (monkeys are less of a problem here than in Croc).

Report Check-In

We took spot 6 as it was dry, place was empty when we stayed, no barman on premises (coronavirus caused cuts in staff). We had no animals on site during nights but monkeys were a nuisance so bring your sling shot. During the day we watched a show of loads of crocs feasting on a hippo. Ablutions are very run down and need an upgrade. Toilet walls dirty but toilet itself was clean. Nice swimming pool. Restaurant very expensive but lasagne at 16usd was delicious.

Report Check-In

Awesome camp site, will return soon, clean ablutions and very beautiful sun set.

Report Check-In

We stayed here for 3 nights. Everything was fine. The place is as described from other overlanders. Be careful when arriving after a heavy rain - the road to the camp gets very slippery as in the park (parts without gravel). The campsite also gets very muddy after some rain.
The waterhole behind the campsite has restricted opening times and can unfortunately not be used during the night.
Ablutions were clean and there is a monkey-proof bin. Staff was very friendly. We had a good time on this campsite.

Report Check-In

Place was fully book so we did not stay here. 2 Overlanders were here and the pool and reception felt more like a beach party with lots of half naked people..... we moved on to track and trail and were in hindsight very happy to be away from the buzz.

Report Check-In

Very nice sunset over the river. Elefants and a hippo are visiting us. A lot of monkeys. There is also a waterhole direct by the camp. Wifi available between 12am and 2 pm at the reception.

Report Check-In

Arrived for a night and stayed for 3! Loved this campsite and all it offers.

Report Check-In

Amazing place. managers were super kind and accommodating. Grounds are beautiful, elephants walk through some areas at nights, which is cool. pretty good kitchen with fridge, pots, pans etc. Everything clean and functioning. We really enjoyed our stay here.

Report Check-In

Stayed two nights to visit South Luangwa. All the other reviews are correct. Fantastic campsite! We had pitch 9, which is on the river front with 6,7,8 and on the end so pretty good!

Report Check-In

Second time here, we love this place.
But... Electricity: sometimes it works, sometimes not. 10:00 pm, not a single drop of water coming at the showers. Toilets not really clean. Dito fireplace. Great place, but they should care a little more about everything.

Report Check-In

Such a relaxing place, with a beautiful view. We didn’t see many animals on the campsite itself (except for baboons) probably because of the season, but enjoyed the nice spot, swimming pool and clean ablutions, with very hot showers, all the time.

Report Check-In

This is a great camp! Along the river you can se loads of game, lions elephant etc and the whole night you can hear the animals calling. Each pitch has power, shade and water is from a borehole and clean to drink. No issue with hot water whilst we were there. Ablutions very clean too. Nice pool and bar! I would recommend this place 100% and even more so for just $10pppn in the low season.

Report Check-In

Nice place. Refreshing swimmingpool with a small bar. Good shower facilities, but almost no light. When you are lucky/early you can have a hot shower with good pressure. View from the campsite is amazing.

Report Check-In

Amazing place. You would just come here for the view over the river alone! Nice to have a shelter for sun or rain. We chose pitch 6 because of the river side pitches it has the most additional shade from trees, but after rain it turns into the worst mud pool. If you expect rain, maybe choose another pitch. Ablutions can be cleaned better and more often. Seems like later in the evening the hot water runs out.

Oh, and you’re not suppose to walk from the campsite to the reception/restaurant when the river is high. On the longer track there are often aggressive elephants protecting their newborns. We got escorted back by car. They can also pick you up, ask the pool bartender to call someone.

Report Check-In

Agree with all, great place.

But be careful with many baboons, they will steal all your food. Leave nothing outside, not even for 10 seconds!

Great view from campsite, elephants lions leopards crocs hippos.... We saw them all out of our rooftop tent.

15 mins from small village with all you need. 20 mins from gate to NP.

Report Check-In

This is BEST camp site we attended so far in East Africa. 10 USD per person to camp and for that you get designed place to camp with hut roof over the spot, power point next to you barbeque spot just for you, swimming pool, bar and hot water in showers, common areas for relaxing and eating. I attached pics for prices of other accomodation on the site and games prices. BEST thing about this place is you get to see wild life, we saw family of elephants, hippos and monkeys

Report Check-In

We stayed 3 nights and would have stayed longer if not for the cicadas which were noisy beyond belief. They have spots for overland trucks, but big rigs also fit in camps 6 and 7. Best MTN cell phone signal is in the lapa at camp 6. Watch out for the monkeys, they even open tents and car windows. Never move more than 2m away from your grill, or you will go to bed hungry ;-)

Report Check-In

All has been said about this location and it is true. Would like to add that the road from Chipata is in excellent condition.
Cell phone reception is very bad and as such almost no internet. The camps internet is very poor

Report Check-In

nice view of the river. clean ablutions. $10 pppn green season price.

Report Check-In

Nice and peaceful with wide river views, small pool, expensive bar, drinkable water and clean ablutions, I like this for the wildlife feel and quietness and its 10USD pppn incl whatever taxes there might be and 3% extra for card payments. Only 4 spots on the river which are quite close but we had lovely neighbors and the elephants move past and many birds can be seen!

Report Check-In

All as what has already been mention but now $12pppn

Report Check-In

When you camp here, after you ask why you should pay to visit the parks... just from this camp you can admire a lot of animals!!! Anyway, super safe place, there is always a guard to avoid big animals come to the tent area

Report Check-In

Just look at the other reviews. A beautiful place. Nothing to add
:)

Report Check-In

This place is in wrong location - it is located at -13.10000, 31.75000

Report Check-In

as mentioned before, try to get pitch 7, 8, or 9

Report Check-In

Wauw! Normally I do not give a review when there are already tons of them but this one deserves it. The campsite itself is nice, the pool is a nice refreshment though a bit small, but the view! It is really great. On the first day we arrived we saw elephants coming through the campsite, around 15! We saw giraffes, crocs, hippos, hyenas, and plenty of other wildlife just from our camp spot. Also, we had some problems with our brakes and they were nice enough to help us out as they have a workshop for their own defenders and landcruisers. Normally they charge 20$ per hour but because we did most of the work ourselves we only paid for some fluids, very friendly staff. Camp is 12$ pppn.

Report Check-In

We heard so many good things amd were excited to check it out. We've tried to get a campsite there but in October almost everything was booked. There was a spot available for one night and a couple of days later but nobody seemed interested to check it properly so we took off. Manager didn't seem to care.

Report Check-In

Recommendation! Our favorite place to visit the NP. Spent two weeks there and though some Overland trucks arrived it was never disturbing. Private and overland campgrounds are separated. We can also recommend to join a night gamedrive, USD 50pp for 4 hours, experienced guides.
Furthermore we saw two Wild Dogs from the campsite.

Report Check-In

Campsite on the Luangwa river in front of Luangwa national park. We saw Elephants and impalas at the campsite. Great campsite. 10$ in green Saison 12$ in high saison. Highly recommended. Expensive restaurant.

Report Check-In

Not much to add to previous comments. Except that I paid $10 because of green season and that there only a few pitches next to the river. Be sure to ask for either pitch 7 or 9 if you have a car because of the views and place to put the car. 6 has lots of space but less of a view while 8 has great views but no place to put a car. Lots of overland trucks if your unlucky. Ablutions are quiet good but could be better for that price. Everything is very expensive. A loaf of bread costs $5. So does a bundle of firewood, but since it os hard wood it will last quite long. Still, it's a better idea to buy some charcoal in the village beforehand. I stayed 7 nights and almost every day I saw new animals in the neighbourhood or even at the campsite.
Internet access is just ridiculous. Only between 12 and 2 and only at the reception and also very slow. 3G reception with MTN was much faster!

Report Check-In

Our 3rd visit to this camp. As always a joy to visit . Feels like you are in The National Park. New waterhole hide a great addition .

Report Check-In

Lovely camping spot right on the river. Can watch elephants cross river and roam through site. One night lions did too! 15 min. from the park gate, sites could have more shade and the restaurant is overpriced, but other than that can't complain. Much nicer than Croc Valley or Track and Trails. Price went up to Kw120 pppn but worth it for the amazing views. There are also mechanics on site who helped us fix the indicator switch on our Land Rover, surprise surprise - something else broke.

Report Check-In

Great campsite with beautiful river view and great location!

Report Check-In

We loved this spot! What a gem. Camping on the river, the elephants walked past the camp every day, we even had lion in the camp one night. Real bush experience. You can order firewood from the bar, lots of braai spots. Kitchen for communal use. Great facilities and great staff. Short gravel ride here, easy just watch for animals. Cost was 100 Zkw pppn for camping. Chalets are 45 USD pppn. Internet between 12 and 14:00 every day, but only around reception. Speed is ok. Not for big work.

Report Check-In

Large busy campsite overlooking the river, swimming pool, bar, and restaurant, good value at $10 pppn, about 15 mins to the NP gate, game drives $50 plus park fees, or self drive, reasonable ablutions, showers a bit hit and miss, firewood available but expensive at $5 a bundle, bread and veg also sold. Good access and lots of animals in camp, can be noisy with over lander groups

Report Check-In

Great location next to river, friendly staff, 25 minutes from park entrance. Ablutions clean but a bit old.

Report Check-In

One of our favourite camps. Pitches overlooking river are super. Can get crowded during peak SA holidays and then not so much fun. Separate pool & bar for campers. Plenty of Game in camp & viewed from riverside.

Report Check-In

Superb place directly at the Luanga with view of elephants, hippos, crocs, baboons and leopard (if you are lucky). A campsite i side the park wouldn't be any better. Popular with overlanders.
