Description

Camping Guaimaro is nestled on a privately owned secluded plateau, just a 10-minute drive away from Barichara and surrounded by panoramic mountain views. Its location is convenient to unwind and to explore the area, with a direct trail to Barichara (35 min.) and another one nearby to Guane (1,5 hours). It´s a place for people who seek nature and tranquility, with plenty of flat space so you can find yourself a nice spot.

After traveling the world, we converted the finca´s old tobacco farmhouse and started several sustainable and regenerative projects. On our site, we have municipal water, free Internet access, a BBQ-fire pit and electricity (110/220). Furthermore, there are solar-heated outdoor showers, a kitchen/communal area, a washing machine (incl. soap nuts) and we also offer freshly baked bread, beer and homemade jam. Please note that toilets with chemicals cannot be emptied here. We speak your language.

Camping: 25.000 pesos pp/pn (from 12 years of age onward). Children 4-11 years old 12.000 pesos and children up to 3 years old are free of charge. Electrical connection to RV 10.000 pesos pn. Tuk-tuk’s between campsite and Barichara COP 9.000. There is no height restriction. WhatsApp/Phone: +57 3124901654 / +57 3108565180

To add to all the positive comments, we LOVED it here. Our favorite campsite of the entire trip so far. This place has a really special vibe and is absolutely beautiful. Joep and Julia are so friendly and open to sharing their knowledge.

I highly recommend taking the paid property tour if you are interested in permaculture, water systems, food forests, etc… Joep was so enthusiastic to share everything he’s learned over the years! 🌱 oh, and being able to volunteer for a day was amazing as well. Nothing like learning firsthand!

Definitely buy some sourdough bread 🤘🏼

Extremely dog friendly. Our 🐶 didn’t want to go and played every morning and night with their dogs.

See you guys at our future permaculture, alternative building project in Italy and/or Brazil! 😎

One of the best campsites we have visited so far during seven months of traveling in Latin America! The outdoor bathrooms are definitely the best! Beautifully located, beautifully decorated and maintained! The two owners Julia & Joep are super nice hosts and leave nothing missing! Julia's fresh bread is heavenly good! Everything you need is available (flat space, kitchen, good WiFi, drinking water, washing machine, hot showers...). We can wholeheartedly recommend this place!
We paid 25,000 pesos per person per night. Drinking water costs extra.

Update: Camping Guaimaro is now directly accessible again! Since they just opened up a repaved part of the road, it is now only a 10 minute drive from Barichara.

Report Check-In

Very relaxing and comfortable place to camp and recharge. Both 110v/220v available. The owner is an architect, so the ambiance is fantastic. Strong wifi, hot shower, laundry, and delicious home made bread and jams. Our dog loved it here.

There are 2 roads to get here - the shorter one is being repaved. The longer way takes about 35 minutes, and the views are spectacular.

The hike over the mountain is worth it, and if you fancy a great meal, Elvia in town is one of the top 10 in Colombia - we paid 207,000cop for an amazing meal for 2.

Report Check-In

As mentioned below, one of the best place we stayed in South America. Beautiful, clean, everything works. Fantastic out door bathroom and shower. Road construction going on until Dec, so need to take a 30 minutes detour to reach the campsite ( map attached) . It turned out to be a beautiful drive / detour through the countryside. Road totally ok, we enjoyed the detour. The bonus: the detour takes you through a beautiful little village of Guane, definitely worth a stop!

Report Check-In

Yes it has a nice flat area, awesome bathrooms and a relaxed atmosphere. But for us on a van it’s not worth the price if you can camp in Barrichara for free. The washing costs 15k per load and used only soap nuts.

FANTASTIC! NO need to say more. Thanks Joep&Julie for being your guests!

This campground is an overlander meeting point, mainly because of the extremely welcoming hosts. There were 5 vehicles and 2 tents on the place when we were there. Price is 20k pppn plus 10k per vehicle pn for electricity. Walking to Barichara takes 45 minutes mainly uphills.

I don't know what more to add. We had a lovely 6 (!) night stay here. Great talks with Joep and Juul. We loved the bathroom, eh, art project. It's just a must visit place to be inspired and relax or hike the area. Be careful though, you could fall in love with this place and stay much longer than intended.

Just loves the place. The views, the calm surrounding, clean campground and facilities, social area, the homemade bread, the walls to Barichara or Guane. Joep and Julia made a small paradise and are very friendly! So are the nice dogs. (2)

¡Encantador! Gran lugar para estar cerca de Barichara y disfrutar del clima y el paisaje.

Un sitio maravilloso, la atención de los Joep y Juul es muy amable y esmerada , hay un sendero para caminar hacia Barichara.

Report Check-In

Best campground in Colombia for us. The owners are so nice and brought fresh baked bread in the morning to our camp. Facilities are cleaned every day. Super nice place to meet overlanders. Nice base to start hikes. We loved it a lot!

Report Check-In

We stayed here for about a week to visit with a friend. The bathrooms and showers are nice, dug into pits in the ground with a garden to look at while you shower.

The grassy area for camping is a bit uneven, with no designated positions. There is 1 picnic table in the center with a faucet and 2 outlets.

For the 2 of us it was 40,000cop per night, a bit too expensive to stay longer, but fine for a few nights.

Report Check-In

Let the nature do the talking!

Joep and Julia are more like the curators of this place. There are plenty of cool things to see, like being in a museum but a living one. Joep is an ex archaeologist, sculptor and artist, Julia is an architect and interior design. Together they gave this campsite a very distinctive touch. And also they are great people, super interesting to talk to and like to share their knowledge about Colombian plants, rocks reusing water and sewage systems 😀
The name, Guaimaro, comes from a majestic tree perched at the limit of the site, overlooking the valley.
The view is incredible and you can look down on the whole valley with the river Suarez and the other small pueblitos on the other side.

We are lucky that this area is not very populated (yet)

It is mostly quiet place. There are some farms around and the only source of noise are mostly the tuktuks boom boom boxes, dogs, and rarely some weird guests.
Well some birds and various animals can be very noisy too. I’m thinking of guacharacas! 😂
There are a lot of life forms to discover including the pew pew frogs and colibri flying around.
There is a huge biodiversity in Colombia and the best places to experience it is when you can be for at least a few days in a natural environment. This can be in the paramo and national parks of course. But here is definitely a good starting point because the nature is abundant and in many areas it has been just left to grow “almost” undisturbed, like in the small food forest and at the sides of the campsite. That said there are many corners and small islands which are exquisitely manicured with native plants and rocks and of course the campsite area is mowed regularly.

Over the years, what was an old ruin and a tobacco plantation has been minimalistic renovated with local natural material and older architectural techniques including some walls made of stamped clay, local wood, and beautifully arranged dry stone walls.

The showers outside in the nature are universally acclaimed by campers as a work of art. See it to believe it!

They have other ongoing projects which are supported by volunteers. They have already an impressive system of water filtration and rain water collection with a system of pipes and natural filters that reuse the water for irrigation and to flush the toilets. But there is more to come. There is a vermicomposting project and a bigger rain water container being installed as I write this.

Another cool projects involves the creation of food forests which would just thrive reusing dead biomass to fertilise the soil. Some action is needed to make sure that the right plants are being cultivated and that the right ones can coexist sharing enough sunlight. So it can be quite a bit of work to get it right and some knowledge of plants is vitally necessary.
If you are interested in all of this the owners are available to give tours and explaining how everything has been done and why. I had one and it was very interesting.

From the campsite to Barichara it takes around 40 minutes waking. Cross the ridge on a well marked path with an elevation around 140 meters, enjoy the viewpoint over the valley and the village, and descend via the botanical park, called Bioparque. This is just one of the walks you can do around here…

I would suggest a minimum stay of 4 days to enjoy the place and the surroundings but I have met people who stayed longer, simply because it is a quiet and beautiful surroundings. Where people might have a chat with some other traveler, read a book or listen to geckos calling under an old roof🦎

Best campsite in Colombia by a mile. Truly enjoyed our time here. Joep&Juulia are wonderful hosts and their place is immaculate. Thank you!

Report Check-In

Just like everyone else already said: This place is just amazing! We only started traveling through South-America about a month ago in our campervan and already feel spoiled because of this place. The owners are so nice and the location is amazing. Everything is clean and the hot outdoor showers are like a small piece of art. There are some great hikes starting from the campsite (one goes to Barichara and the other to Guane). Easy to get back by mototaxi's if you don't feel like walking. The road to get to the campsite is a bit steep but we managed perfectly with our Ford Transit. If Barichara is not on your itinerary, than change it just so you can camp here 😉 p.s. buy their homemade bread 😋

Amazing place to stay, we spend 5 nights there. Joep and Julia are very interesting, they rebuild all the finca, they propose a tour of the property to explain all the project.
You can reach barichara by a path from the garden.

We loved it !

Report Check-In

Perfect campground with a lot of space with leveled ground. The owners are a very friendly and helpful dutch couple. They ran the place with a lot of dedication, ideas and design. There is an ecologial water recycling system supplying the well designed and clean bathrooms with hot solar powered showers. You have a fully equipped kitchen for general use. There are locations with shadow, access to fresh water in the center and a nice view in the valley. He even reopened a ecological dumpside for us he built some time ago but has disappeared under the lush vegetation. We stayed a couple of days. The entrance from the main road can be a bit tricky for very big rigs. We came with a pickup and trailer, 9m length, it worked.

Our favorite campground so far!!! the views are amazing, you will have the best sun sets in there!
Joep and Julia are the best host we have had! They are very cool, we really enjoyed talking and spending time with them. also they bake an amazing bread with jam.
The bathrooms and showers are the best you will have in your camper life.
The first time we went there we spend 3 weeks, after some months we come back and spend another 3 more weeks, and definitely in the future we'll come back!

Definitely one of the top camp sites we’ve visited so far in Latin America. Awesome canyon views, great hangout area, and fantastic/clean/hot showers. Everything here was perfect. Joep and Julia are fantastic hosts.

It is a bit of a steep hill to climb to get to their site, but our RWD Transit did well.

Simply fantastic! We rarely spend more than a couple of days in the one place but this place just was too good not to enjoy for a while! Highly highly recommend!

Joep and Julia are excellent hosts, they are very attentive, friendly, and always concerned about the well-being of the guests. I highly recomend this place. Great facilities.
Its location is perfect. Its far enough from Barichara for one to be able to enjoy nature, but close enough to acces public transport or enjoy a walk.
If you enjoy tranquility and nature, this is just the spot.

Get ready to settle down for a few days or weeks.
The options are endless here.
Hike in 35 min along a very scenic route to Barichara. Meditate on a rock with the sounds of birds around you. Rent a mountainbike and visit a local swimming pool. Enjoy a campfire with other Overlanders, the volunteers and Joep and Julia. Walk an ancient path to the tiny town of Guane. Read a book in the hammock. Volunteer here (via Workaway) and learn about ecological bioconstruction, landscaping, planting trees etc...

This place will make you feel at home. Our two weeks volunteering stay felt too short. Esthetically the place is just so gorgeous, both nature and construction wise. A paradise where one day we hope to come back!

Best place we have stayed for camping by far. Joep and Julia are extremely nice and welcoming. The place is beautiful, scenic and confortable. Barichara is a short 1.5k hike away but you can always take Tuk-Tuks. We came with our kids 7 and 9 and they had a very nice time and Guaimaros open areas and hikes.

We had a great time here, lovely hosts, beautiful spot, delicious bread, jam and joghurt.

Report Check-In

Can't really say anything that has already been said. This place is the best campsite we've visited in the 8months of our trip and very affordable. Lucky for us, the site had several overlanders for new years and we all had a BBQ round the fire pit. Great times. Great people. Great hosts. Great views.

If you don't do anything in Barichara... Just come here to unwind and chill.

Report Check-In

The Plan was to stay 2 nights but it was so amazing we stayed 7 nights. Weather is perfect, people are perfect, Kitchen-/commonarea was well maintained. Outdoorshowers (that's a Plus), 2-3 hammocks in the shade, Pitfire station, Trees to hang hammocks or just enjoy the nice shade. They prepare bread every day, selfmade yogurt (not dulce. YES!), selfmade jam, cold coke and beer available.
Since now, there are no real signs but don't worry you are on the right way. It was not sandy so don't worry you will made it and it's totally worth it.

Report Check-In

We agree with the description and comments and can say, too, that we loved this quiet and beautiful place. The bathroom is really clean, the kitchen well equipped. There is enough space to find yourself a nice spot to park/camp. Tuktuks from town are hard to get/expensive when there are lots of other people in town. But you can still walk over the hill, which is approx. a 30 minute walk with nice views. Thanks for sharing your place with us, we would come again!

Report Check-In

Incredible place to stay for some nights and enjoy de peacefull camping that Joep and Julia had created with so much love. You can notice that in every detail, from their incredible home made bread, jam and yoghurt up to their amazing style of architecture and design. Really i felt as i was at home!!

Report Check-In

The last part of the road to this place is rather steep and sandy. We (7m, 4t motorhome, front wheel drive) were not able to drive up and had to turn back.

Report Check-In

Fantastic campsite. Agree with all foregoing comments. We as a family of 5 really enjoyed our stay. Crossing through Barichara was a bit of a challenge with our 2.6m wide, 7.5 long rig, but managed. Last bit to campsite is off road, but shouldn't be a problem for any size rig. Really recommended!

Report Check-In

Joep (archeologist) and Julia (architect) have found a great spot for themselves: historic stuff in the ground, new purposes to be designed for historic structures (and built by Joep), in a perfect climate, in balance with nature. Having such a great home is a rare wealth, but they're not keeping it to themselves: they share with overlanders (who may not be as sustainable as them) and with volunteers (who currently help build extra bathrooms).

We enjoyed the shade of the tree (that lends its name to the place) in the far corner of the 'camping terrace', overlooking both the valley and the property. The terrace is great for meditation sessions, or just 'being there'. The fireplace, radiating absorbed warmth after sunset, is built leaving an old rock in place: construction with respect of what's already there. And this is to be seen elsewhere on the property: stones in bathrooms, roofs over kitchens, rainwater falling where it always did (no gutters).

Price was 18000 COP per person per night.

An inspirational stay. Leaving was the hard part.

Loved this place so much!!! such a beautiful property run by amazing people. Everything about the finca is fantastic, the fresh bread, the yogurt, the grassy camping area, the beautiful communal areas, the outdoor bathroom. Just wow! Our dog also has the BEST time with their two dogs, he played for hours and hours in end with them. They even have wifi in the camping area! Joep and Julia have even made little signs guiding you to hike to town. It's a wonderful place, please dont miss it!

Joep & Julia have shared their beautiful place. Hot showers, fresh bread in the morning, homemade yoghurt, kitchen, and lots of great people staying. Joep and Julia are WONDERFUL, so kind, welcoming and great to talk to. They make the best bread we have had of our trip- we bought two loaves a day and ate them without shame. The outdoor shower is amazing, the dogs are friendly and fun, it’s an easy hike/run/walk to the old Spanish road to Guane. It’s 18,000 pesos/person but worth more.

THE best campsite in South America! We travel for more than a year from Montevideo to Ushuaia and then up north and like this campsite the most. It is absolutely quiet and peaceful, has a stunning view, huge area also with shade under trees, perfect climate (~ 27 degrees in the day and ~ 17 in the night more or less around the year), no sandflies and almost no mosquitoes, fantastic night sky, wonderful hosts Joep and Julia from Holland who treat you like friends and offer delicious fresh bread every morning as well as homemade jam and yoghurt, all facilities needed (kitchen, bathroom with unique outdoor shower, washing machine, hammocks etc.) in a warm modern design (Julia is an architect) and so on. Such a beautiful and quiet place !
I am a french bacpacker, and the place fit well for my little tent. Joep and Julia are very friendly, and if you like hiking ask Joep to show you all the nice place to go with your feet from the campsite, it worth it ;)
Thanks again for all J&J !

Lots of space, cool (hot) outdoor shower and you will love the fresh backed bread they are offering.

Really nice place run by a dutch couple. Seems to be turning into an overlander hotspot. They offer homemade bread, joghurt and are absolutely nice. Immaculate bathroom - outdoor shower which will give you the feeling of being in Bali. Nice walk into the town. Moreover, you can do the Camino Real. You can also use their kitchen, etc. Drinks can also be bought on site.Try their marmelade!

See descriptions above. Joep en Juul are lovely people, the kind with whom you feel comfortable from the very first moment. Amazing views. We met other really nice overlanders here, which is also a plus. ;-) We tried everything they offered and it was all superb (bread for 5000, jam for 6000, yoghurt for 2000, beer for 2500, wine for 17000 a bottle, the washing machine for 7000). Advisable to bring food for dinner when you're planning to arrive in the late afternoon/evening since there is no shop nearby, Barichara is a 10 minutes drive but it tends to rain in the area in the evening. That's what overcame us, but Joep and Juul were so kind to offer us some of there vegetables! Defenitely worth to go there!

I returned because of the beauty of the place but even more to see Joep and Julia again.
You should not have any trouble reaching it because my little Dacia managed . And if you want to leave your car and go to Barichara there are motor taxis for 6000 pesos..

Lovely people at the right spot at the right time! I was totally happy here and stayed much longer than usual. One of those places you won‘t forget

Joep & Juul have created a really amazing environment every overlander should see. They truly have everything you could want except beer. We came for a night and stayed 5. The camp is very basic with a fire ring, but you're free to use their communal sink and bathroom with a hot waterfall shower (it's better under the sun). They have redesigned their tobacco finca using traditional techniques and earth structures while maintaining an open nature vibe with a very chic artistic aesthetic. With fruit trees, fossils, hammocks, and really sweet dogs. Ask either of them about their designs as they love to share, it's truly a masterpiece. They also sell fresh baked breads, yogurt, guided tours, and the chance to wash your own laundry. Joep also has an AMAZING dvd collection that we shared one night for movie night. Oh yeah and Barichara is walking distance, but I need no intro to barichara other than go to the paper factory.

Joep and Juulie are wonderful hosts. Their house is amazing. Spa-like shower that is solar-heated, very nice. Internet reached the camping area because they installed a wifi booster. Sink you can use to wash up. Compost and recycling. There is a stove that they can hook up if you need. There are two ways to walk into town from there, and very close to Camino Real. Wish we could have stayed longer.

Guaimaro Campsite is the best place where we stayed so far! The owners, Joep and Julia, are super friendly and very easy going. We had trouble driving the steep entrance. Joep helped us out and towed us uphill. After this they flattened the entrance the next day, so it is no longer 23%!! It must be easier now for vans to drive to their camp site. The camp site is really large and beautiful with some trees and a place for camp fires overlooking the mountains and valley. We could use the kitchen, the refrigirator, the WiFi and the (hot!) shower. They serve fresh baked bread (4000) and you can use the washing machine (7000). They renovated a tabaco shelter into a common area overlooking the mountains which is super beautiful to sit or relax in the hammock. We didn’t want to leave this place!! They also have an Instagram account (@guaimarocampsite) with pictures to you can get an idea of the site!

We have only good things to say about this place. Joep and Juul are a lovely and very hospitable couple. We loved staying on their beautiful property. The campsite has great views over the surrounding mountain area as it is settled on top of a mountain. The dogs, Marx, Sacha and Phoenix are lovely and very friendly.
We were able to use all facilities which were all super clean, well maintained and organized.
They fixed the driveway while we were there so the 23% is down to about 20% I guess. We loved staying with them! Thanks again!!

One of the nicest places we’ve stayed. The owners are wonderful hosts! We ate their delicious home baked bread fresh every morning and followed their advice for awesome hiking right from the doorstep. Highly recommended.

We were lucky to be one of the first guests at this wonderful peaceful, relaxing and quiet new place. The last strip from the road is a dirtroad but good to manage. The dutch owners are really nice and speak german/ english and spanish.
They sell homemade bread and jam.

We really loved this campsite. The nature is really beautifull and Barichara is a really nice colonial town (we liked Barrichara more then Villa de Leiva because it feels less touristy). The campsite is super tranquil and has a beautiful view (nature all around). The owners are very welcoming. We ended up staying 2 weeks. Also the hike to Barrichara is really nice, we took a tuk tuk coming back for 6000. The camping is 15000 pppn. We recommend!

What a lovely place! For sure our favorite and most beautiful stay in Colombia. It’s great that this nice Dutch couple share their land to overlanders. Good WiFi, nice shower and kitchen and a lot of space. The bread and jam is delicious. From the campsite you can make a beautiful hike to Barichara. We loved it here and stayed many days! We can recommend this place!
