Brazil → Argentina (for Iguazú falls)

Once at the main gates park in the center. Walk in the building in front of you to get passport stamped. 5min wait. If you need paper work with TIP go to the building on the left, they told us we didn’t need since we will be coming back in a few days. Done. If your rig is big take the lane on the far right.

Then, the long wait.

It was the year end and around 5pm. Cars started to line up around the bridge over the river. You can take the right lane (for taxis and buses and large vehicle) which is much faster but there’s a guard at the end and he might tell you to go back and line up. If he’ not around you can go past, but it’s pure luck. We were unlucky, we took the right lane but they told us to go back and line up again. Although there were cars going past him, maybe if you had an Argentina plate he will let you go, I’m not sure. We watched a whole movie and we were still waiting. It took us 4hours to get to the Argentina gates.

Argentina side, take the 2nd out 3rd lane. there were only 1 staff per lane, even though there were like 5 counters on each lane. Pretty easy, you don’t need to get off your car, just get your passport stamped and done. We didn’t even get our van checked.

So, long story short, avoid year end and avoid late evening. bon voyage.

Argentina to Brazil. Note! The entrance road has low clearance, we are 3.30m and did not fit, although the staff tried to push us to go under. Take the right road for higher clearance (same as trucks).
Migrations took 5min, Aduana for the TIP about 10-15min. They did not inspect the vehicle. It was in Thursday around 4.30.

If you want to go to Paraguay from Argentina you don’t have to do the paperwork for your vehicle. Only passport stamps for the person. I asked Adouana for Brazil and he confirmed it.
So the only TIP you would get is at the Paraguayan border going in.
So leaving Argentina you do passport and turn in your TIP, then only do passport in and out of Brazil and then passport in and TIP for Paraguay

Report Check-In

Argentina to Brazil. We joined the foreigner queue to exit Argentina and were then directed to the small Aduana office on the right after the migration booths to have our TIP canceled. Entering Brazil we passed by the empty booths and parked our vehicle by the Aduana sign in the middle between the car entry and the car exit. We visited migracion first which was directly in front of where we parked but the entry was on the side facing Argentina. We got a 90 day visa. We then went to the Aduana office which is on the far right as you face towards Brasil, you will see that trucks are stopping there to have their papers stamped. As it was a Sunday we had to wait for our paperwork to be approved by someone who was offsite but the officer helping us was friendly and invited us to sit in his air-conditioned office so it really wasn't too much of a problem. We were issued a 90 day TIP.

Brazil to Argentina:
Park in front of the building on the left side. Migracion is in the office opposite the parking lot. For canceling our TIP we had to go to the Aduana in the entrance line. Very nice guy, before we could ask he gives us a copy of the TIP with the exit stamp.
With a big rig take the bus line on the right side to exit Argentina because the car line is to low.

Entering Brazil: if your vehicle has a plate of a country that does not limit with Brazil, you have to fill a form at “Receita Federal”

Thought I’d provide an update on the process for a day trip into Argentina. As you come to the Brazilian “gates” you must stop and enter the buildings that are in the centre of the incoming and outgoing roads. When we went through there were no staff (police etc) managing the traffic flow, so you could have driven straight through (which locals can do) - but don’t. You must stop and go into the office. Here you will get your Brazilian exit stamp. We asked if we needed to surrender our TIP and they said no (for a day visit to Argentina Iguazu area). Then drive over the bridge and line up (probably a lengthy line) for immigration on the Argentina side. When you get to the front of the line (one of the booths) you will get the entry stamp in your passport. The Aduana staff are then a short distance (10m) further on. You need to pull over and find a park without blocking the traffic. The staff were friendly, and we were eventually pointed to a staff member who took us to an office to fill out the TIP. The return process is easier. Simply get into the line on the Argentina side and when you get to the booth, hand over your passport and TIP. They electronically cancelled the TIP and gave the printed copy back to us. On the Brazil side stop at the same offices (parking is available on the Brazil side of the gates/offices) and get stamped back into Brazil. They were happy that we had kept our TIP.

Make sure you get the TIP.
At immigration the staff (3 officers) told me I would not need any papers for the motorcycle. Asked two times pointing at the bike outside my helmet in my hand. No, you can cross, no papers needed.
As a foreigner from Europe like me or the US etc. you do need a TIP. Don't let them talk you out of it. Find Receita Federal and insist on it. They only issue the papers at the border. Further into Brazil it is not possible and you will have to return to a border post.

Brazil - Argentina.

Brazilian side: Easiest one we’ve done. Just got the exit stamp on passport. No vehicle papers etc.. we were in and out in 2 mins.

Argentina side:
For us it was quick with an Argentina plate, from the bridge onwards you drive up the side ( Argentinos only ) and into (1) lane. All digital, no stamps, no documents required for me being Australian also. 1 minute vehicle check.. we had fruits and vegetables.. which no problem.

For others it was a couple hours waiting in your vehicle, lines were huge, super busy, from both sides (12:30pm)

Report Check-In

Argentina - Brazil. This was the weirdest border crossing we have done.

We arrived at the side of Argentina, there was one older lady who stopped us, she was very friendly and was very interested in our lives. We parked the car and she asked us many personal questions. We gave her the paper to stop the TIP. She checked the car 4 times and every time she checked it she said that is was good and then came back within a minute to check again. The last time, she asked if we could remove the wood on the inside of the van (our interior) to see if there was anything behind. We never had this before. But we did and then she saw that there was nothing so it was okay.

Then we drove to the Brazillian side. We parked the car, got our passports stamped (make sure they put 90 days on it, and you don’t have to fill in the form which lies on the table outside), then we walked to Aduana. There was a woman sitting at Receita Federal and couldn’t speak English but in Spanish she said it wasn’t possible to get the tip, that we needed different documents, so she called a collegue and when he arrived he told us that the TIP for foreigners can only be given in the morning between 08:00 - 11:00, we were there around 2. He told us to come back the next day.

You can stay the night in brazil without TIP if you stay in the city Foz de Iguazu, because in 150 km there is a stop where you need to show your TIP. Anyway we came back the next morning and there was a different person sitting at Receita Federal, he was so kind and helped us with everything immediately. Then we had to go in the building and another man put everything in the computer. He said that he didn’t know why the woman didn’t help us.

He gave us the TIP (in Portgues & English) they call it Tecat, and asked us when we leave Brazil (max 90 days). He put a date in the system when we want to leave, after that they automatically cancel the TIP so he said that it wouldn’t be a problem if there is no Aduana at the border where you exit Brazil to cancel the TIP (never had this before) but if there is a border you can cancel it yourself but if not no problem. Just make sure you leave before the date you said you would leave. PS. Brazillian side didn’t check our car at all.

Fast crossing leaving Argentina. In Brasil you must get a papper for your van, motorhome, etc
The office is on the left side in the very corner. Be aware that you need time there. They type our document wrong and had to wait again more than 20 minutes.

Entering Brazil, Drive past ‘islands’ and park on left. Walk back to front of building to get entry stamp (need to fill out form first). Auduana is building furthest to the right as you enter the islands. Go here next....process is slow, but friendly people. No copies needed.

Brazil —> Argentina
Quick and easy crossing. They won’t stop you from driving straight through though so make sure to stop and get your passport stamped! Not sure about hours but was still open at 8:30pm.

very helpful staff who helped with our Chilean car import papers. took about 30mins to clear everything.

Entering Brasil. It's all very confusing on the Internet, many people say you do not need a Tip, but at the border de Receita Federal does provide you with one, even though Immigration at the same border says you do not need one. We did not want to see what happens at a police stop when you do not have a Tip, so we just got it anyway. No fee and the Receipt Federal officers were very friendly. It's in a small building opposite of Immigration. Just avoid troubles and get it.

We entered Brasil from Argentina with our Chilean plated car. Very quick at immigration, just an entry stamp valid for 3 months. asked if we needed TIP but she said no need. same as wiki IOverlander. But! it didn't feel right and we decided to go back today and found the Receita Federal office opposite the immigration where we asked if we needed a TIP and they confirmed yes as neither we or our car was from a Mercosur country (Arg, Par, Urug, Brasil). We asked for a 3 months one and he was very nice and completed the form online and provided us with a stamped TIP. On the doc it states you need to show it when leaving Brasil. Took about 25 minutes. They confirmed that at Iguazú they very rarely do one as most come from Mercosur countries.

Report Check-In

Entering Brazil from Argentina was easy as far as getting our passports stamped. BUT when we asked where to get the paperwork done for the camper, no one seemed to know. We were sent to several places (even to the second floor; all that was there was a room full of cardboard boxes). Finally some man in jeans and a ratty t-shirt (most people were dressed in uniforms or shirts with a legal label on them) called someone and was on the phone for some time. He then got on his computer and then called someone again who seemed to be talking him through what to do. At least the room was air conditioned! An hour and a half later he gave us the paperwork. We were dumbfounded that one of the highest vehicle traffic borders in the country didn’t know how to process a vehicle.

German going to Argentina for the day: Immigration stamped me out, customs said to hang on to original TIP until I leave for good (still had enough time on TIP).

Report Check-In

We went from Brazil to Argentina. On immigration was everything OK and fast, just stamp to passport. But on Aduana we met some “new-guy” there and he did not know what to do. So we must wait aprox 1 hour for his boss. Aduana is in the room with sign “importado” on left side od building.
