Description

The Audubon Society now charges an entry fee to the sanctuary. 4 $US per person. They wanted to charge me after I was settled down. They had started charging the very day I arrived.

Currently the lake water level is abnormally high, thus trails around it are not doable. Also the road that goes to the other side of the village (far west) is also very muddy. Too hard for motorbike, and I wouldn’t risk it even in a 4x4. So there are boat tours, watching birds around the village and doing nothing.

Still a great place for birds.

Latest Check-Ins

Peacefull place, lots of different birds. Unfortunately, although it's a wildlife/water birds sanctuary, the inhabitants seem to enjoy driving cars into the laguna on weekends, washing off dirt and oil from their undercarriages.

they said I need to pay 8blz but I can only camp in private property.

We are enjoying crooked tree lodge.

It's a great area for wild life especially birds.

Report Check-In

Went through at around 4 pm, visitors centre was closed.
Just a security guy at the entrance, welcomed us but didn't charge us anything.
Water is very high at the moment (they told us this is unusual for the dry season) so not many birds around.
There is a short trail behind the public school you can do, where they told us we might see monkeys but none there :(
We did meet some lovely ladies who invited us into their garden to show us how to make cashew jam and wine :)

The fee station is at the road leading to the village just after the dam. They don't stop you but there is a sign saying to buy tickets. We stopped and the guy asked, what we were planning to do (roaming the village, going to one if the hotels etc.). I told him that we want to watch the birds (due to season (high water level) there weren't that many to see) and we then paid 8 BZD per person. Our friends, who came a few hours later, didn't notice the sign and passed through. Nobody came to check.
