Nicaragua
Beautiful large reserve dedicated to turtle conservation and breeding. We were able to release 50 baby turtles at sunset, an experience I will never forget! If you want to tent camp inside the park cost is $500C/tent and if you want to stay in your camper in the lot they only charged us entrance fee of $200C/p which is a bit expensive but all for a great cause. Whether you see turtles is determined by the time of year.
Why? By checking in after you’ve visited a place you let others know this place is still functional. You can also add or correct any information.
Came here a bit out of season, but still a lot of eggs. We have been lucky and in the morning around 7 little turtle just hatched. So we met with the rangers at 6pm to set them free. What an amazing experience we got all to our own.
The ranger was super friendly and very welcoming. We joined them on there control tour at 9pm and 3am in the morning. But saw no turtle nesting this time.
The beach itself is amazing and no people around.
Worth the money for a government run station.
The beach spot is amazing BUT I definately don't recommend this place.
Our two days stay was really bad. First of all they made us pay much more than the price (we had to pay for our 5 year old boys and when they realized the mistake, they say it is too late to give our money back and they took a nice commission on the exchange rate of our dollars)
Then during our 2 days there they acted like we didn't exist when we were here to see the turtles.
We asked to be notified in case of birth which they did not do. We noticed a birth when we went to see them, tired of seeing them in front of us without greeting us or talking to us. We also wanted to know more about their job, they cut short the discussion, not interested in talking to us.
The camping area is nice, in front of the sea, but 500 cordobas for no comodity is too expensive. There is no water, no network, rubbish on the ground are not collected and the toilet are disgusting.
Still 200c pp for entrance/overnight. It does seem like you just pay once for however long you stay. The tent camping spot is really nice, cars are a bit farther back from the beach, but plenty of shade. Toilets are pretty gross, but usable. We tried our luck out of season, didn’t see any turtles. Another camper said he saw one two nights earlier. He told us best luck is at high tide the week after a full moon. The beach is great, empty!
Report Check-InImpossible access with big rigs but We found 1 km after the entry next to an intersection somewhere to park.
We spend a night there. Very quiet. And we walk to the beach to see tortles at night.
4runner/rooftoptent. Great place. We arrived in the afternoon paid 200C each for entrance to the turtle reserve and could camp in the shaded car park. There were baby turtles hatching on the beach all afternoon and at sunset we helped release 100s more into the sea. Around 10.30pm we walked along the beach and found 3 mothers laying eggs. Amazing.
Report Check-Insuch an impressive. when we arrived in the late afternoon, there were already turtles on the beach. Workers are nice. Price is still 200C pp to see the turtles and free to sleep in your van in the parkinglot.
@rutaventuramerica
Report Check-InWe liked it there. For 6 US you can enjoy the nice beach, set baby turtles free and walk over the beach at night (alone!!) and watch adults laying eggs. If that's not worth 200 Cordobas what else?
Report Check-InThis place is in wrong location - it is located at 11.14393, -85.79277
sorry, bad place. toilets very very dirty. many soldiers stay at the sanctuary, they were rude, unfriendly and we did not feel safe. campsite on parkinglot dusty and to expensive.
Report Check-InPlaya La Flor is one of only two beaches in Nicaragua where large numbers of turtles come to lay eggs. Possibly even thousands in one night, depending on the moon(Please see attached photo for a schedule when to expect mass arrival of turtles). You can watch the turtles come ashore and if you are lucky even help to set little turtles free. You can camp on the beach (if you have a tent) or stay in your car on the parking area. 200 Cordobas/person entree fee and 500 Cordobas/tent, no facilities. This might seem expensive, but is only a fraction of what you would pay in Panama or Costa Rica. Well worth the experience, also because we were the only ones there!
WARNING: watch your stuff!! We woke up in the middle of the night while a guy was going through one of our bags. You can leave gear at the rangers office, or ask them to watch your things while you go turtle watching.
