Boondocking off this road which leads up to Lake Como in the Sangre de Cristo mountains. The lower portion of the road is a good gravel road, through open fields. This part is easy enough for any rig, and there are a couple of spots pretty far down. As you climb higher and higher, the road deteriorates, until it turns into one of the toughest 4WD roads in Colorado. There are lots of places available, it just depends how far you want to go.
This is boondocking, no facilities. I had decent TMobile cell service from my spot. You can hike up the road if you don't want to tackle hard core 4WD, and there's an old ghost town. There are also three 14ers you can reach from here, so plenty of hikers out to climb the peaks. Free.

Great place to stay near GSD NP. Great views of the mountains and great stars at night. Verizon LTE is great, AT&T gets the job done. Beware at Rattlesnakes at night!!!
Report Check-InPlenty of spots as you drive up the road with flat cleared out areas and fire rings made with existing rocks. The road gets rocky and uneven, not good for lift cars about 1.5 miles in from the turn off.
Report Check-InEasy road with lots of spots in the first bit. Didn’t go up into the rocky area but looks like tons of spots available. Wide open field so no privacy but no complaints here.
Report Check-InExcellent place to boondock before going to Great Sands! Got here at 2 am, we passed the cattle grids and stopped at the second pullout, a couple cars were in the first one. Super quiet and peaceful, we woke up to snow on the ground and a beautiful mountain view.
Report Check-InGreat views, but lots of trash and piles of kitty litter full of cat poop, which my dog was very interested in. So, thanks to those who trashed the place. Had to leave first thing in the morning because it was disgusting.
Also, had 3-4 bars of Verizon LTE but never got anything above 2mbps.
Report Check-InVery windy! Was scared to light a campfire or even use charcoal as the surrounding area is all dry grass. Beautiful but distant views of the snow capped mountains. No privacy for peeing women or pooping if you are a toilet-less van lifer. I liked the spot but only for a few days. There is a great 3 mile hike straight up the rocky road. I only went about 1/2 mile past the aspen grove.
Report Check-InGood spot off the road with a lot of space. No need for 4x4 or high clearance for the earlier spots. My only additions to the other reviews are 1. Watch out for the small cactus that’s right off the road 2. Coyotes were right outside our truck in the evening and the early morning so careful with pets
ATT had 1-3 bars
Man made fire pits
No toilets
nice free camping with a good amount of spots. had no trouble finding a spot every night during the 3 days I spent checking out the great sand dunes np. some locals are using this as a party spot on the weekend.
Report Check-InPerfect place to camp for free. The KOA was going to charge $50+ for a night. The place not too far up the road from this location was going to charge $11 a night. During the time of year mosquitoes are horrible. The 'Lake Como' area has little to sparse mosquito issues. There are cows in this area as you are in a pasture type location, but do not let this turn you away. there is minimal to no smell and the cows never came near our vehicle. You can hear them every once in a while.
I highly recommend this location. Easy straight drive to Great Sand Dunes National Park. No crowds, and AMAZING SUN SET!
I have cell service with LTE here as opposed to the $11 camp site up the mountain.
We also had no wind issues. Just enough breeze to keep things from getting stuffy.
As described. Pretty popular in the nice weather but lots of options for campsites with fire pits. We went up a fair bit but the road is pretty rough and rugged. Nice views of the surrounding farms and distant mountains.
Report Check-InThe OP was not lieing, this road gets TOUGH as you get further up. I'd guess only rock crawlers or master 4x4ers could make it all the way to the top with their vehicles. The campsites seem to all have fire pits but when I got here around 830pm all the level spots seemed to be taken so if you need level ground get here earlier. I was also able to get pretty decent T-Mobile signal here. 200-900kBps
