Description

Opens at 830am, finishes taking applications at 10am. First 30 minutes are chaos, so arrive around 9am and push your way to application window once in the room. There are many Ethiopians (150+) trying to get 30 day work visas, and there is a separate system for them.

Most passports can be picked up the next day at 2-3pm. US passports require approval from Khartoum, so plan for 3-4 days to avoid stress.

We had our Egyptian visas, but it seems to no longer be required.

What you need:
2 photos
1 passport photocopy
Letter of invitation from hotel (don't know if reservation is enough)
Yellow Fever - we brought, but they didn't need.

Moez is a guide in Sudan and was very helpful to us (US passport issues) +249912972571 WhattsApp

Latest Check-Ins

Bad surprise at the Sudanese embassy in Addis Ababa, which asked us for a "permit" to submit our Sudanese visa application without further details and without any kindness;(. After 5 days we was able to receive this "permit" thanks to a contact in Khartoum. Finally our biggest surprise was the cost of the passage to Sudan. 250 $ ppp for the "permit" which was transmitted to us from Khartoum by our contact and 100 $ ppp for visa

Visa Requirements:

2 passport size photos
invitation letter of a sponsor (will stay there, so make a copy too)
copy of the passport
original passport
personal presence of the applicant

Visa fees: 100 US Dollar in chash for all foreigners. The bills must be from 2009 or newer
US citizens have to pay 160 US Dollar

Don't get confused if you read about a Covid-19 test or a Syphilis Test from LABCO. That is not necessary. I didn't bring them and nobody asked for it.

Biggest thing is the letter of invitation. Ask other travellers where they get their letter of invitation. I got it from a hotel in Karthoum and had to pay 100 $ as a kind of room fee deposit in advance for it. It's enough, if you get a coloured printing of the letter, which was send to you via Email.

The visa branch of the embassy opens now at 9 am. My application was done at 10 am and I could collect my passport with the visa at 3 pm without any problems.

Safe travels!

Add. information: printed hotel reservation is needed for each traveler (2 prints for a double room). Many use Grand Holiday Vila in Khartoum. Expedia works for reservation, booking.com did not for us. They will ask managers name, but was no problem after some explanation that we did not know. Maybe somebody could find it out for future travelers. 68 USD gets you one month single entry, pickup next day 2 pm. Three month or multiple not available. Visa runs from day off application 30 days to reach the border, then you have 30 days in Sudan from date of entry. Print shop is same street side 5 building or so further, close to super market.

I arrived around 8am. Pretty laid back process. I used an email from an AirBnb host and that seemed to work fine. Literally no security.. surprised this is an "embassy"
If you look look on the map, there is a TOTAL gas station one block to the south that I parked my motorcycle at. I gave the attendant 30 birr and he seemed happy to keep an eye on it.

Report Check-In

Arrived at 9am and there was a queue of about 75 people. Were asked for passports, copies of Ethiopian visas, 2 passport photos and copy of passports. Needed to give details on full name and address of where we were planning to stay in Sudan with the managers name. Although the clerk was busy and abrupt, she helped us and was efficient. Because it was Friday, we can only collect visas on Monday after 2pm. Cost was 68 USD pp. (South African PP). They closed door at 9:30am and allowed no more applicants inside

Report Check-In

Still very easy process. Stuff is really friendly and helpfull. They fill out the application for you, because the form is in arabic letters.
copy of your passport
copy of the ethiopian Visa
two photos
$ 68
asked for a sponsor, means where you plan to stay in Sudan - told them the German Guesthouse in Khartoum, needs no booking.
All done in less than one hour - got the visa the next day at 2pm.

Dropped off one day at 9am, picked up next day at 2pm. Very friendly and easy.
Also wanted a photocopy of Ethiopian visa. Don't need any kind of invite letter or booking from a hotel or person, just need name of hotel and name, address and phone number of the manager. Message Norbert from his guesthouse in Khartoum. If you stay there, he's willing to give you the info!

Went to get our Sudan visas today. All very easy and friendly, as described below. One further note - for those traveling with children, you also need to bring birth certificates plus a copy of the birth certificates, to show they are yours! Same $68 price for kids visas as well.

Came here on Friday at 9:00am. Some people inside but the woman sitting on the table asked me very fast what I want.

She told me only tourist and no transit visas.
So I went for the tourist Visa. Gave her my passport, a copy of it, a copy of the visa for Ethiopia and 2 photos. She asked me for some sponsor and I gave her just any fancy number, name and adress. Half an hour later she came back and told me to pay.

After payment (68$) she told me to come back monday at 2:00pm. Back on monday they gave away all passports by just reading out the names.

No problems....

Report Check-In

Very smooth process. We arrived with all the documents and information that they required. The staff were helpful and the process took us maybe an hour if that. Visas were then picked up the following day.

On both days in the morning there were no massive crowds, I would say maybe 20 people maximum were there to receive visas.

Photocopy place just up the road from the visa section, get all photocopies there if need be. They don’t do passport photos, so if you don’t have them, get them before you arrive at the embassy from somewhere else

Report Check-In

US passports can now be processed in 24 hours like everyone else. We told them we had to leave Addis and were able to pick up same day, though she said we were lucky. 8am-10am for visas.

US Citizens who got 30-day tourist visa the next day with help from Moez Mahir....
We applied for a 30-day tourist visa. The documents required are the same as for the transit visa (passport, photocopy of passport, photocopy of Ethiopia visa, 2 photos, sponsor contact info). We handed in all of our documents around 8:30. We waited until 11am, when we were handed back our paperwork and told to pay $68. (Same price as transit visa).

Even though we are American, we were able to pick up the visas the next day at 2pm. We think this is because we contacted Moez Mahir in Khartoum a few weeks in advance of applying. (See Chris Ratay’s note below with contact info. If you use Moez as your sponsor, you must provide the embassy with his physical address and phone number). Moez told us he got pre-approval from Khartoum and provided us with a reference number. At the embassy in Addis, no one was interested in the reference number, but it’s likely that they did in fact have our names and the pre-approval since our visas were turned around in a day. We agreed to pay Moez $90 per visa for his assistance. He is trusting us to pay him in Khartoum when we arrive there. Communication with him over WhatApp was very smooth.

I got a transit visa the next day.

No letters or reservations were asked for, but you must be eligible for the Egyptian visa on arrival. I travel on a Belgian PP.

We didn’t got but met another Overlander at Wims Holland House who had Problems getting it without the Egypt Visa. And the Egypt Visa in Addis is for Residents only. So better do your Egypt Visa in Nairobi! In the End he got a Letter from his own Embassy that explained his Situation so he finally got the Sudan Transit Visa but it sounded like a lot of Hassle.
