Why? By checking in after you’ve visited a place you let others know this place is still functional. You can also add or correct any information.
We visited the Centro today and totally agree with the previous post from jucamadison!
We wrote Ruben and his team a day before via Facebook and got an answer a few hours later and were invited to visit the next day. We could help cleaning for 1 hour and afterwards had time to talk to the extremely friendly worker and see the turtles. If you want to you can leave a donation.
This is a wonderful initiative run by only one vet, Ruben, who’s become the turtle expert in Equador. If you want to visit, please contact Rubén first via Facebook: Centroderehabilitacionmarina/
We were invited to visit the center and the clinic because we rescued 2 turtles: one in Canoa (called Gilberto) the other in Puerto Cayo (called Molly), and we made sure they were taken here. He operated on both to remove fishing hooks from their stomachs and esophagus. While visiting the center they told us they can’t accept all tourists that just show up at the center because they don’t have the appropriate infrastructure and turtles get stressed, and we actually saw them turn down a few visitors while we were there. So make sure to contact him ahead of time so he can find time for you, and tell him you’d like to make a donation and/or buy one of their t-shirts. Soon they will start building a new “turtle hospital” where visitors will be welcomed.
If you find a turtle that needs help in Ecuador, call 911 and ask for policía ambiental. They will come and take it to Rubén -or temporarily somewhere else on the way if this center is too far and the turtle is too weak to make it there. While waiting, keep the turtle in the shade, and cover it with a wet towel so it’s stays hydrated.Report Check-In
We thought this sounded like a great place to visit with our kids. When we arrived there were two men inside the center (with some turtles and blue boobies) but they were not interested in letting us in. Our Spanish is not great but we believe they said we needed permission to enter from the hotel down the road. We backtracked to the hostel a few hundred meters away and talked with some people there. They had no idea. When we returned to the rehab center a few minutes later to get better instructions we found the men walking away down the beach. They saw us over their shoulder but seemed intent on leaving us behind. Shame, we were going to make a nice donation to their cause.Report Check-In
