Description

This is the southern road of the 2 roads connecting Song Kol lake to the A365 (Koshkor-Naryn road). This dirt road is in relatively good condition and offers beautiful landscapes. No 4x4 needed. Having driven both roads, I found this one was nicer as it follows a nice canyon which can be viewed from the top of the pass on the lake side, 5 minutes walk from the road. Down from the hairpins (west side of the pass) when reaching the river again there is a beautiful waterfall if you walk in the canyon for 10 minutes.

2023 correction - would recommend 4x4 for the hairpins as the road is not in good condition

This is a beautiful road! Or at least we think so ‘cause we almost couldn’t see a damn thing in the mist and rain 😅 we were happy to have the 4x4, some parts were extremely slippery and big ruts, so just handy to not get stuck. But it’s doable without, just be very careful after heavy rain!

Super beautiful road, with a load of hairpins going back up/down the mountain. Overall the road was in good condition, no 4x4 needed. The driving at the bottom of the pass is also beautiful. Would recommend.

Took this road from Songkul to the main road with a 2WD. Would recommend it this direction otherwise it would have been going up steep roads for a long time.
Beautiful views, one of our favorite scenic drives.

Beautiful drive and views. All the snow is gone at this time of the year and the conditions of the track are ok. But you can expect steep and tight hairpin turns with some ruts and rocks on the road.

We drove down from the Son Kul to the A365 in a 2WD van and that made everything much easier compared to the other way around.

Drove up to the lake using this road on 27th May 2023. Some snow still on the road but it is passable. Definitely needs a 4x4 - we almost got stuck in a 4x4 but that was partly due to half the road being covered in snow. The road is in great condition through the valley until you get to the mountain pass which is a series of tight hair pin bends, at this point the road condition worsens dramatically. We saw 2-3 other vehicles on the road in the 3 hours it took us to drive up to the lake

Nice pass. kinda short compared to others, but that's not a negative per se.
saw people do it in a Mitsubishi Delica

Very nice pass!

Went here by truck from the lake downwards.

4x4… wheelbase: 3,5m… wide: 2,5m… high: 3,7m…

No problem.
Might be different under very bad weather conditions.
