Campground is open seasonally from the third Saturday in April. Upper parking area is for day use only. When the campground is open: you do not need to have horses, nor do you need to be in a group.
BLM Description: "Secluded within a hilly expanse of oak woodlands, grasslands, and chaparral, you can find Cowboy Camp. Cowboy Camp is a recreation site comprised of a day-use area (complete with a wildlife viewing deck), an overnight parking area, and a group campsite. 27 individual horse campsites make up the group campsite. The group campsite has parking for fire pits, parking for horse trailers, and access to four vault toilets (two are located in the upper parking area and two are located in the middle of the group campsite). Drinking water and electricity are not available at the group campsite. Please practice Leave No Trace and Tread Lightly principles to recreate responsibly on your public lands. Target shooting is not permitted at this recreation site. Cowboy Camp's group campsite is open to vehicles and horses from the 3rd Saturday in April through the 3rd Saturday in November."

"Cache Creek Natural Area - in BLM-Land. A free spot in a nice area. A lot of singing birds. Really quiet at night. No cellphone signals. No bins, bring it in - take it out to keep this beautiful place clean. Really dark sky with amazing stars!"
Why? By checking in after you’ve visited a place you let others know this place is still functional. You can also add or correct any information.
Great spot! Thanks BLM!! Vault toilets were clean. Place was quiet. A few other campers.
Report Check-InPlace is not closed- it opens the third Saturday in April. We didn’t stay since there were a decent amount of people and we wanted something a little quieter.
Report Check-InGreat night at this location. Plenty of spots for vans and RVs with decent vault toilets.
Report Check-InSpent two lovely nights here. There were 2 other vehicles camping both nights. No signage regarding it being closed. The gate down to the campground area is locked but the upper parking area has plenty of space. Level. Good hiking across the creek if you don’t mind fording the creek. No cell service. Sheriff rolled through around 4pm yesterday to use the toilet then left without saying anything to any of us camper vans/cars. Please be respectful of this wonderful land.
Report Check-InCowboy Camp campground is closed for the season. Citations are being issued. Cowboy Camp consists of two areas: The lower area is a seasonal campground closed from about mid November to about mid April. This area is separated from the upper day use area by a locked gate. The upper area is a day use area only and is closed one half hour after sunset all year. There may not be signage. Plan your trip in advance accordingly.
Report Check-InEasy stop for a night. Large, level, marked spots for big rigs (easy to pull through) and other dirt roads with pit toilets throughout the area. Several other parked near us. Dark sky made for great star viewing!
Report Check-InEasily the best stop in the area. Pit toilets are decent, and it very quiet and beautiful spot.
Report Check-InFree clean camping area with pit toilets. There is NO cel service here.
Report Check-InWent out here to try to get away from light pollution to see the Perseid meteor showers. We arrived after sundown so weren't sure what the place would look like in daylight. Good news...it's a beautiful location. Very quiet and only a few other campers on a Thursday night. Bad news...we didn't see the meteors because smoke came in and obstructed the sky. That said, we will be back once the smoke clears out.
Report Check-InFree BLM campground/dispersed camping area. Vault toilets but nothing else. Some sites have shade, most are full sun.
If you have dogs or kids, keep an eye on them - we saw a 4’ rattlesnake hunting among the ground squirrel burrows near our camp. It was interesting to watch him eating but wouldn’t like to meet him up close!
Report Check-InLower camping area was closed as of March 12th 2021, sign said "closed for winter", we spent the night in the upper parking lot which does have a no overnight parking sign. Regardless beautiful spot, lots of chirping birds and mooing cows. Sun doesnt come up for a while because it's in a valley (currently about 2hrs after sunrise). As others said, no cell.
Report Check-InEasy to find...a sign on the road says Cache Creek recreation area, and we slept all night easily, it was quiet and chilly but brilliant stars! And in the morning the birds were beautiful, and we did see elk (in the distance) and a gorgeous hawk hunting. Pit toilets, natural water in the creek but no faucets. Highly recommend
Report Check-InEasy to find, a sign saying Cache Creek on the 16 shows where to turn off. It was quiet and peaceful, with gorgeous birdsong in the morning and pit toilets. We had the place to ourselves, and in the morning we saw elk in the distance (bring binoculars!). Highly recommend

tranquil. have seen elk, real cowboys herding cattle, ruins of old camps(?). bucolic hills all around.
The location has been corrected. The place I was going to camp near Orland is closed because of COVID, but thanks to iOverlander, I was able to find this place. It's a good spot to spend a night. There is a little traffic noise from nearby Hwy. 16, but not bad at all. Lots of room, and very easy for all kinds of vehicles. No cell service.
Report Check-InThis place is in wrong location - it is located at 38.99740, -122.35487
Report Check-InQuiet place. Come here often. Weekdays not so crowded. Sometimes a lot of flies (horse poo), but controllable.
Report Check-InGates are open. hot during the day but cooled off fast when then sun went down. beware of flies.
awesome that this is free, thanks BLM!
Report Check-InStayed here one night on 4/23/2019.
Big open areas. Big rig friendly, we have a 36' 5er. Only thing would be, if you come on a weekend there may be lots of campers and horse people. A local told us it gets packed now and then. We seen lots of Elk and even a wolf. Great scenery.
large field with several campsites next to bear creek. Several times during summer months they hold equestrian races and people often bring their horses there to ride the trails
Report Check-InVery pretty location in the hills. A couple horse trailers and one other camper there. We were all on. Top of each other because the gates down to the Field were closed.
**this could be due to government shut down and not permanent**
Large open space surrounded by hills. Clean pit toilets. Only two other campers when we were here.
Report Check-Infree. okay place for an overnight but it's basically just an open field with a couple rings. only one place with shade. pit toilets were not very clean and someone had piled up some trash bags in the corner.
Report Check-InAs described - great place to spend the night of you're driving through. Not much in the surrounding area, although we didn't attempt to check out any of the hiking from the area either.
One large open field area and two smaller gravel parking areas (all have pit toilets). It was definitely warm and the flies were a hit of a hassle, but nothing out of the ordinary. No cell service.
Report Check-InLarge, quiet grassy area. There are a few fire pits scattered about, as well as 3 outhouses. The signs state that there are hiking trails also, however we have yet to explore them.
Report Check-Innice place for the night...at the moment very hot and lots of mosquitoes at night..
Report Check-InCache Creek Natural Area - in BLM-Land. A free spot in a nice area. A lot of singing birds. Really quiet at night. No cellphone signals. No bins, bring it in - take it out to keep this beautyful place clean.
Report Check-InPerfect and beautiful place to spend a few days. Large meadow along a small river with pit toilets. Fire rings, no water. Very quiet.
