Description

This is the Chilean Auduanas building. This is where you will need to come if you need to transfer ownership of a car or motorcycle you have sold here in Chile to another traveler. On weekends and holidays, go to the ground floor of the airport (arrivals), near exit 4.

TIP extension part 2
My responsible person was late in extending my TIP (3 days, long weekend excuse), for aduana, 3 hrs. 3 days, 3 months is all the same, too late.
The wheels fell off the process and TIP entered the bureaucracy endless loop. The only thing aduana sees when you do not extend the TIP is abandonment. My responsible person was willing to pay the fine (3 days worth) but aduanas way of thinking is, the fine is based on how long the vehicle stayed in the country before exiting the country. Short story.
I went to the carabineres in Cochrane, spoke to the captain, he called up the local aduana office in Coyaique, aduana asked for 2 pieces of paper; 1, name, auto, passport and TIP info. second page was the excuse for not extending the TIP (I used personal).
12 hours later, the carabinere captain received an aduana one page letter stating I had 10 days to leave the country. Aduana called up the border crossing agent (Paso Roballos) and give him the heads up that I was crossing soon. At the crossing, all went well.
a few days later I got an email stating they were waiving the $774US fine. All good.

The aduana on the first floor of the airport (near exit 4) is open 24 hours. We wanted to change the TIP from the seller's name to mine on a long weekend and the first time we were there, they refused, said it could only be done at a border. Before we left towards the border, we stopped at the airport for a second try and they did it 5 minutes. Both tries were at the small office inside the airport, since the customs' office building was closed during the weekend.

When we first visited we were not permitted to do a transfer of ownership at the airport. We were told to go to the border, despite pushing there was no way he would do it. We returned the next day and a different guy did it in 5 minutes!

TIP 6 month extension.
I came here prior to leaving Chile for 6 months to learn how this can be done.
1. Come here (8:30am to 2:00pm or at the airport near arrival gate 4 {24 hrs}] with a responsible Chilean and your vehicle documents/passport. Aduana will put your responsible persons' information on file.
2. Prior to the end of your TIP, your responsible person returns to Aduana (with the soon to be expired TIP and ID) and extends the TIP for 3 months.
3. Prior to the end of the extended tip (in my case 5 months later) the responsible person can either go back in person to either aduana offices to extend the TIP once more or it can be done via email. The way I understood it was, you can do the second extension yourself from anywhere in the world if your responsible person scanned emailed you the TIP extension. Aduana receives your emailed extension and gives you another 3 months which they email back to you. In my case, I will have just under 2 months left on the 2nd extension when I came back.

before leaving the country, if you have sold a car or a motorbike, you must communicate with the custom. there is also an office inside of the airport ground floor, arrival, door 4.
the normal procedure includes also that both of the owners, old and new, have to be there at the same time.
if you dont do this the vehicle will be under your custom responsability with all the implications that this would mean.
