Darby Wells Road | Wild Camping

Nice spot close to town of Ajo. More spots further down Darby Well Rd but here, the signal was good, enough to stream movies at night, very quiet and closer to the main road. Besides the border patrol pick up truck that makes a gross amount of dust by driving way too fast (road is 15mph), everything was perfect.

Drove the whole road with 2WD van and didn’t have problems. Steep berms/curbs on the sides of the road can make access to some sites difficult. Intermittent Verizon service. Surprisingly crowded and had some difficulty finding a spot. It does have easy access to the highway and felt safe!

Nice big pull in sites for big rigs. Road is a bit noisy with work trucks and border patrol but otherwise quite peaceful. Many spots to possibly get away from noise further down the road but you may loose phone service.

Quiet, closest spot you can sleep for free at near cactus pipe national monument-as far as I’m aware.

Drove 1.5 miles from the main road and stayed in a large loop on the left. There are several nice spots to camp along this easy dirt road. The serenity among the cactus is amazing. The night sky without any light pollution is absolutely spectacular. It couldn't be any more beautiful. Somebody from down the road told us while he was looking for his lost dog this morning, he saw wood burro hanging out next to our rig but we didn't see them. 🙁 Overall.... great place to camp and highly recommend. Verizon cell service good the entire time.

This road flanks the huge skirt of mining detritus coming from the massive pit on the other side. That sounds a lot worse than it is, since the mine is not operational and the countryside, which is what you're going to camp in, is lush Sonaran flora and fauna.

The road is wide at first and in great shape. There are pulloffs to the side starting immediately after you turn onto the road. As the road continues, it gets smaller, and after a bit you come to "The Sign," which is a warning that illegal immigrants may be present. All I saw was Border Patrol and white guys with trailers and motorhomes.

At The Sign, the road splits into 3. A sharp left takes you away from the area. Straight ahead and to the right are different entrances to what the locals call the Scenic Loop, a 4-mile narrow road that loops around, so it doesn't much matter which way you go.

Along all these narrow roads are tracks that lead, in many cases, to camping spots. Unfortunately there is often very little provision for turning around, so be warned, scout ahead. I saw rigs about 50 - 100 yds from the road, so that's how far you're going to have to walk to figure out if you can turn around.

If you're nervous about all of this, I would suggest setting up in one of the spots that are near the highway, which is what I did. There's plenty of room for larger rigs, and we heard zero highway noise.

Near the highway, there are between 1 - 2 bars of Verizon; signal is improved with an antenna; I was able to stream video at 480p. AT&T is 3G only. No idea about T-Mobile.

Overall, this is a beautiful spot with quick access to the charming town of Ajo. The Historical Society Museum is small but interesting, providing a quick look at the town's history as well as a random selection of crocodilian fossils that the curator has no idea about -- someone just left them on their doorstep. Shops in the gorgeous plaza are open, but mask-wearing is by no means universal.

Stayed here again. Lots of tents and RV's a little bit more up on the road then the GPS location is. About 1 mile from the road on left side. Border Patrol comes by several times so very safe

We entered as the sunset and it’s an easy spot to find and we pulled of the dirt road and immediately found a level spot to park our RV. Very quiet

Great place to spend a few days of peace and quiet. Many RV’s of all sizes in the area but far enough to have your own private area. We were three RV’s together with a nice fire pit and had a great time. Very quiet at night. Easily accessible from the main road and only a few miles on a dirt road.

Hardpacked road suitable for any clearance and length. Easy on/off highway. Flat parking on numerous pull offs. Backside of mining slag pile. Close to main road, but quiet after dark. Felt safe and secure.
