Description

Distant Relatives is a new and unique ecolodge, hostel and backpackers, and an exceptional budget-friendly alternative to the classic hotels and resorts of the Kenyan Coast. Distant Relatives Ecolodge & Backpackers is staffed by a few travelers and a lot of locals ready with the best advice. They're especially suited to groups road tripping with a community Kitchen available for use for free, a large braii grill you can borrow and a nearby supermarket for shopping. There's also a private beach a few minutes walk from the lodge through a small but stunning forest.

Latest Check-Ins

This is NOT adequate for camping with any type of car! Even though advertised on their website as being suitable for cars, the parkinglot is tiny and full and has zero charm. We went to Tribe Bandas next door, which is cheaper and has a way better space for camping and a beautiful chillout area

Report Check-In

Not really suitable for campers but we could camp with our car at a parking slot in front of the hostel. 800 ksh pppn.
Nice place and restaurant. Beach is really close, but because of a lot of locals\beach boys at the hotel pool and beach area it was a bit uncomfortable going in the water.
Beach boys behave like they are on drugs.
Friendly stuff, good kitchen and hostel vibes. A lot of dogs and monkeys are running around what makes it really special!

Nice place to relax, great vibe and good food for decent prices. Car camping is at the parking lot which is far from ideal. But we relaxed by the pool all day and ordered dinner from the restaurant so it didn’t bother us. Very quiet at night, even during the weekend. Good wifi. 1000 ksh pp pn, cheaper in low season, more expensive during christmas (aka superhighseason).

You can pay by card, they charge a bit extra for it (don’t remember how much).

Nice place but not adequate for camping (only small spots close to the bar/restaurant). It was very noisy all night when we were there (more a party hostel). Staff friendly, good laundry

By far our favorite spot on the Kenyan coast. This place is an oasis of activities, comfortable corners, extremely friendly staff and owners (Alain Mari) and a myriad of fun games/ pool tables/ darts/ volleyball. This place attracts the people from all over the world who all seem to share a like mindedness making this the best social backpackers/ campsite we have been to yet. A stone throw from the beach where there is bio luminescence every night that you can swim in! All in all this place is phenomenal. If you plan to stay 2-3 days prepare to check in for a week at least! The camp site is under shady trees near the volleyball court near the yoga stage and the large A-frame chill area!

A place with a truly great atmosphere and swimming pool. Not perfect for camping, but possible. They charge 600 Ksh pppn, Electricitiy available if you ask for it. Good food, cold beer, average wifi, good selfcatering kitchen, longdrop toilets - not the worst I ever had, but not perfectly pleasant either.

Space in the parking lot for one or two 4x4s or more space for ground tents inside. Great atmosphere indeed but more of a hippie backpacker vibe than an overlanders vibe. The composting long drop toilets are great.

Camping was 600 pp but absolutely perfect for our group. The loos and showers were absolutely phenomenal. The bamboo shower especially! We thought the loos were long drops but it turns out they're composting loos and the 'humanure' is used in their food forest. The manager told us they'll be building another set closer to the camping grounds though a 3-minute walk isnt that much of a task tbh
We got there while it was a bit busy but we managed to use the kitchen, cook up a massive feast with new friends and still put away leftovers in the fridges provided (label your food like they advise you to. W never lost anything but we wouldn't have loved to either).
The bar isn't too expensive (have their caipirinha if you want to knock out early ;)! )
All in all it was a swell place to stay and we made new friends who met later on down the road in Uganda as well! Pack your swim trunks if you dont always because their beach has bio-luminescent plankton that makes night swimming beyond magical!
