Just past the "formal" pay $20/night Sheep Canyon Campground, where there is an outhouse and picnic tables, is an area at the base of the Sheep Canyon trail head where you can camp for free. First come, first serve and it is a popular spot because of the flowing creek up the canyon. The whole Coyote Canyon valley area is closed June 1st to Sept. 30th to preserve the watering rights of the desert Bighorn Sheep. Lots of dispersed camping all around this area. However, 4Low and high clearance is necessary to get up the "staircase" part of the trail past the third shallow water crossing.
Why? By checking in after you’ve visited a place you let others know this place is still functional. You can also add or correct any information.
A favorite getaway. The road is in much better condition than previous years. a handful of "pay" sites ($20 / night). however if you're not at a site with a table or fire ring then you're disbursed. there are plenty of places in the flats around the area. Sheep's canyon and Coyote canyon are the attractions here. beautiful dark sky. 4x4 (not AWD) necessary to get here.
Report Check-InBeautiful area! The little river is wonderful. Paid camping is 10$/night and provides metal fire rings (the only way allowed to have a fire around here), tables and pit toilet, but there is also plenty of free camping around.
Report Check-InBeautiful, dark, and absolutely quiet on this Thursday night in December.
No service and no services.
The road in is much "improved" over past years. I'd still recommend 4x4 and high clearance is necessary, but a stock pickup truck is more than capable of making the drive.
