Description

Overnight stays are possible. Not allowed to stay longer. Not for big mobiles, 23 feet was no problem.

Great view, in daytime many visitors, hard to get a parking place. In the evening, they leave. in the night, you will be alone. We felt very safe, a policeman was there the whole night.

Information for cyclists on the T-M. So I started the climb from El Paraiso at about 3:00. A local man was skeptical that I could make it to Guanajuato that day and offered that there is camping on top of the mountain. Climbing took about 2 hours (pushing most of the way). At the road, I had an overpriced but filling meal at one of the stands, and, upon asking, they told me that yes, there is camping up at the monument. After seeing all the comments here about how peaceful and alone it is, I decided to give it a shot.

I was here on a Saturday night, so i dont know if this will be typical for a weeknight. There were still tons of people around at 6:00, and as the sun set, no one seemed to be leaving. At around 7, a lot of people started bringing luggage up from the parking lot. I knew there were rooms to rent in the monument, so I figured that's where they were going. After asking around in the cafeteria, I learned that the gate closes at 8:30, I also finally talked to a Padre who showed me where I could camp, up on the platform itself, off to the side, under the roof, he also told me that the sanctuary itself stays open all night so people can pray.

I assumed small groups of people would be kneeling before the statue and making some silent prayers, but that's not what happened at all.

Instead, at about 9:00, from the sound of it, the overnighters gathered on the platform and began a mass. Songs, call and response, the whole deal. I'm glad I brought my ear plugs, but even with them, it was hard to get to sleep. The prayers continued all night until the sun rose the next morning, and the tourists again flooded the monument.

Overall, I'd give it a 7/10. It was definitely secure, like being locked in a church. There was some wind, but it wasn't too bad in the alcove, the bathroom is open all night (BYOTP), and it was certainly a unique cultural experience. I never heard of an all-night mass before. These people have some endurance, and how do they know all the words?

Great place for the night, quiet and calm!

Very quiet location. almost flat. nobody came here in the night. could be windy

Report Check-In

we arrived at the place at around 4pm. There was a lot a people still but we could find a parking spot right at the top. The road to get there is very steep and careful with the topes !
From 6:30 to around 7:30 there was a mass. After it ended it got totally empty at around 8:30 9. Very quiet during the night, we were the only one. Beautiful sunrise

Report Check-In

We arrive around 3pm but the parking was full. We came back around 5pm and was better. The gate for the monument closes at 6pm and open at 7.30am. Toilets 5pesos are inside so we have no accès on closing hours. We had a very nice and quite night, alone. We felt very safe, we travel with a Fiat ducato 6mt long, no problems to came up here.

Stayed in the parking lot. We were there on a Saturday night. Most people leave after sunset. Though there was some buses and I believe people who stayed overnight in the monument.
The noise starts early and the crowds were coming.
We were going to stay down the hill in a big parking lot - but the police said it was safer at the monument. In the morning we went back to the large parking lot- had it to ourselves for hours- while buses and people headed up to the monument. The lot is just up a small incline from the last main vendors at the bottom.

8km of cobbled road to get here so very slow going in our van! Incredible views so very much worth it. We arrived at sunset, and drove all the way to the top and the level spaces. There were still a few coaches and cars but they had all gone by about 10pm. Toilets 5 pesos but open all night and not attended in the evening. It did get windy at night but was not a problem for sleeping, very comfortable temperature. We didn't see any security or police.

I think this is one of the places calling for discretion. I would not dare drugging RV there.... We have 16ft ordinary looking van, did stay on the top level parking lot, had very nice view after sunset and good sleep during the night. We left just after sunrise, before first early birds showed up.

Crowded until sunset. Completely empty just one hour later. Level parking spaces on the top parking lot.

Report Check-In

This is a tourist attraction Cristo Rey (20m tall Jesus statue), allegedly also geographic center of Mexico. Parking didn't seem very level as the whole place is on the mountain, you might be able to look for good parking once all the tourist/worshipers leave. We didn't sleep here, but might be a cool spot.

Really nice place. great view. When we visited, the policeman was also there the whole time, but did not bother us at all.
however, when we visited, the wind picked up
heavily at around 2:30am and made sleeping impossible. we needed to park further down the hill, where we were not so exposed to the wind...
