Crossing from Swaziland to Mozambique

Swazi side was easy, just a stamp in the passport and the customs knew what to do with the Carnet.

On the Mozambique side you first stop to get a gate pass and with that go to the central building. At immigration we needed a copy of a hotel booking and of our passports. We had to pay 650 Meticals each (200 Rand would also be possible). We got the entry stamp, but we needed to wait for the receipt to be written so in the meantime we did the customs. There we just needed to provide the car data. Afterwards we got the TIP and the receipt for immigration.
On the outside there’s another building where you pay the roadtax, receipt says 3$ but we didn’t have any so had to pay 400 Meticals.

I enter from Lomahasha to Naamasha. They were acting strange. then the officer in charge said I need it to pay a Tax for don't know what. I did read the document he showed. Didn't say nothing but countries that had to pay the 650 metical or 200raz.
it's a bribe. I wasn't prepared for that situation. so after protests. I did pay.

Crossing Moz - Swaz. Super easy! In Moz they took the TIP and stamped us out. In Swaz, stamped us in and then we had to pay 100 ZAR for road tax.

They did check our car for fruit, veg and meat. We had fruit and veg (but no meat) and even though he said we weren’t supposed to bring them in, he said we could take them.

All in all, 10 minutes.

Report Check-In

Not too bad, but it took us long because we needed to print out the hotel booking for Mozambique. They won't let you in without the printed version. There is a print shop just before the border, at Eswatini side.

Both customs officers didn't know how to handle a carnet de passage but they did stamp it with our explanation.

For entering Mozambique we paid 650 M pp for getting in ourselves, and 335 for a motorbike (road tax). We bought insurance just outside the border gate, 850 M for a motorbike. They also sell SIM cards and data over there, and they can change money.

Eswatini > Moz, rented 4x4 SUV from South Africa, solo American

Eswatini: exiting the country was not too difficult, the facility is modern and the processing was quick. When entering Eswatini at the Ngwenya Border Post they really focused on every detail of my rental vehicle paperwork and registration disk on the windshield. They made copies of everything, so keep that in mind when entering the country. When entering Eswatini with a rental you should have the vehicle registration, insurance, a note from the bank of the vehicle if it is financed, and a written letter from the rental agency with their letterhead on the paper stating that you are allowed to use the vehicle and cross the border. Also make sure your registration disk on the front windshield is up to date, they focused in on this for some reason. Maybe 20-30 minutes total.

Moz: potentially slow if there is someone ahead of you. Have all your paperwork ready (passport and a printout of where you are staying your first night), know how many days you will be staying in the country (add a day or two for a buffer), and have a printout of your passport ready for them for your visa. Ideally also have your pre-visa electronically completed and approved before arriving, this will speed things up for you! I can’t recall the website address for this, but it’s smart to complete it. For a US citizen a visa did cost something, I want to say 200 Rand but could be wrong. They take physical Rand bills. Since May 1, 2023 it no longer costs usd$50 for USA citizens to enter the country. They will give you a half sheet of paper that documents you have a visa, KEEP THIS PAPERWORK, you need it to exit the country. Seriously, if you lose this you will likely have to pay usd$50 and will get to go on the bribe ride to leave. Once past immigration they move you onto customs where you have to fill out a form for you vehicle. Thankfully the guy at the counter walked me through each entry, so this was easy for me. They want to know a bunch of details about your vehicle like type, model, registration number, chassis number (VIN), owner, etc.

The gate guard may or may not want a Coca Cola, it’s smart to carry these with you into Moz to speed things up.

Now the border post of Mozambique is also direct at the border.

To entering Moz you will need a booking confirmation (printed) if you want to get a visa in arrival. If you don't have any, they won't give you a visa.
