Description

Spot near Race Track Playa. Road from North is bad! To reach this spot from Race Track Playa you need 4-wheel drive and high clearance. Fantastic view over the valley. Absolutely quiet. Below there are more sites and also a pit toilet. It can be windy out here.

It’s a long drive but campground has 9 sites 3 are for tenting it appears. Nice spot we were the only ones here with a beautiful view when we got up. (Arrived in the dark) each site has a fire ring which is the only legal place for a fire. Most sites fairly level

Beautiful location. Takes just over 2 hours to reach off road. No fees and fire rings for camping. No services but plenty of quiet. About 5.5 miles past the racetrack.
Road coming in is easily passable with a high clearance vehicle no need for 4x4 when we were here but snow was present.
We did it in a lifted 4x4 170 sprinter. No issues at all just not a fast route but quite beautiful the entire ride.

Nice campsite. Contrary to everything we've read, there are no pit toilets.

Rough washboard road from the north. We came in our two-wheel drive sprinter, but it was shake, rattle and roll. Good tires are a must. We saw two blow outs on our way in. They were SUV's with street tires. Very quiet campspot and the wind stayed away to make for a very nice night. Took about 3 hours drive time from Ubehebe crater.

The road is just long and washboarded. No particular need for 4wd or high clearance per se, just more chance that you will rattle something important off your car or blow a tire. The race track is neat!

Report Check-In

In dry condition you DO DEFINITIVELY NOT need 4WD nor high clearance to get here from the north. Washboard yes, but a sturdy car (no large RVs) will get here.
Travelling west is 4WD and high clearance country. Extremely rough trail. Much easier travelling westwards (downhill) than uphill. Very loose and slippery rocks, too narrow for trucks.

Great overnight spot when visiting the race track or heading down Lippincott Pass.

10 sites 3 of them walk in tent sites.
Stone fire rings, one shitter. FREE.
It is 2 Miles south of Moving Rocks.
The wasboard is horrible, take your time. But you don't need 4WD.
