Description

We have done 3 entrances to the Salar and this was one of the easiest and driest ones. Highly recommended if you are coming from the North, as it is easy, beautiful and no other cars around.
----
We entered the Salar here coming from La Paz. The road up to Salinas de Garci Mendoza is entirely nicely paved! From Salinas de garcia mendoza to the entrance is a dirt road but not too bad. We averaged 20-25km/h. The erntrance is really good. Just a little water in mid-july. Much better than the one in the south! If you follow the main track from here, you will reach Incahuasi.

Latest Check-Ins

Easy entrance, no issues. Just a small amount of water….hard surface.

The road to the entrance has some washboard but a regular 2wd car can do it.

Beautiful.

Report Check-In

Safe exit off the salar into a the village.

This entrance had the least amount of water of all the ones around the volcano to the east of here. First time on the salar, were a little nervous so had lunch and watched a few tour trucks come off, they go slightly to the west of the main track and then dogleg up onto the entrance to avoid most of the water. Probably makes more sense in person.

June 2022 - Perfect entrance for cyclists who want to cross the Salar. After a heavy rainy season, the municipality decided to flattened the section between Tahua and Isla Incahuasi with a "salt groomer". We were able to ride at an average pace of 10km/h with 1.50" tires. Outside of the track, it's very difficult to cycle.

May 2022, end of wet season the road to incahuasi island is quite asymmestically bumpy now. I had to air down tires and average speed 30km/h. Of course possible to go faster but it will rattle like hell.

Perfectly good causeway onto the salt flats from here. Amazing riding!

Now it's possible to enter to the salar. We enter with our van and normally we go directly to Colchani to exit.

Report Check-In

Not possible with our VW Beetle right now, according to locals. About 40cm of water sometimes. We have seen normal 2wd cars coming out, though (from the West). If we try it I will update this post.
