Description

One of the first official camp spots once you enter Alabama Hills. Big open spot on an intersection of dirt roads. Great for big rigs or multiple. Designated camping in the Alabama Hills is on a first come first serve basis. Some designated sites can accommodate larger or more vehicles than others.
In 2019 the Alabama Hills became designated a National Scenic Area (NSA) by congress. The purpose of the NSA is to conserve, protect, and enhance various resources that can be found within its boundaries. For this reason, designated camping has been limited to 52 sites throughout the NSA. All other previously inventoried sites have been restored to its natural state to protect the resources that are there. More about the Alabama Hills NSA can be found online along with the Management Plan and Environment Analysis here: Alabama Hills National Scenic Area | Bureau of Land Management (blm.gov)
Implementation of the Management Plan was completed in October 2022. We area still seeing visitors who arrive late in the night and find the Alabama Hills to be different than they last saw it and set up camp in a closed area. Our BLM staff diligently patrols the Alabama Hills 7 days a week to educate visitors about the changes. Low clearance auto use caustion. Only 4 offical sites are available at this location.

Latest Check-Ins

Low clearance Vichicle need to be careful appears roads not maintained. Had some hard to pass places so be careful. As of today most camp locations are closed. Very busy as people drive around trying to find a place to sleep for the night. Appears the park is closing for over night camping. First night no places were available second night we pulled in as someone was leaving this area. We were lucky to be able to stay a night.
