Description

We have decided to write a separate entry to make sure that folks know that there are more camping options available at the Lagos de Colon than what has been previously reported.

Once passing the entrance and paying the 20 mex per person there are numerous swimming options in the various lagoons some reaching over 10 meters in depth. when the temperatures rise the cool waters are a blessing! We arrived on a Monday and it was therefore relatively quiet but we can imagine that it would be a zoo on the weekends (lots of closed food stalls and tiendas). For 100 pesos we could dry camp at one of the palapas directly next to the lagoon/river ford that leads to the archeological site (1.2km away). There are 3 or 4 separate camping areas some with and without palapas ranging from 100 to 200 per night. All are dry camping areas and some are only tent camping but the areas we saw could all accommodate vehicles (no big rigs). There are flush toilets available for 2 pesos until 6pm and free thereafter.

This is a wonderful area to rest up before crossing over to Guatemala. Although quite hot this time of the year the water is cool, refeshing and crystal clear. Definitely worth a visit!

Latest Check-Ins

We used this stop as other folks do as a great place to camp the night before heading into Guatemala. We paid 30 pesos each to enter the ejido land & received wristbands. We thought we were in “Cabana Escondida” but turns out we were not. Drove thru two water crossings to awesome flat spots to camp along river. There are little cabins here as well. Bucket flush toilets with no toilets seats. Owner came by next day & collected 50 pesos per truck. He cleaned the banos too. Close drive to pyramid. Beautiful, peaceful spot by a river. Can be buggy here.

Amazing place! We were just going to overnight before crossing into Guatemala but stayed for two. 50p a vehicle and 100p for a palapa at the last spot by the water on the road before you get to the ruins. Jorge was very kind, clean bucket toilets, and very well maintained place. His cabanas looked great too. The ruins are about a 15 minute walk and the falls about 30, both are fun! After three months in Mexico this might’ve been one of my favorite places!!!

Nice spot close to the border.
There are several sites to camp, the GPS location might be the best option as directly at the river and toilets close by.
There are 3 mini river crossings to do, but no problem in any car/bike.
We arrived Sunday afternoon and it was a bit packed with locals (no music :)) but they all left after sunset.
We paid 50 Pesos for the car at the camping and they took 25 pesos pp at the entrance of the park. There are a lot of picnic tables that you can use.

Great place to camp before heading over the border. Not sure if I caught it at the right time but rivers are flowing over multiple sections of the road to get to the camping area. Be careful if you’re on a motorcycle, very slippery!
