Camping spot by the river - This spot is free and only kms away from Somoto canyon. Right now the river is very low and slow moving. Not good enough to swim or shower. Temperature at night was good.

Amazing spot, we spent three nights here. It's quiet and remote at night, but during the day locals come down to swim, fish, and wash laundry. Surprisingly few bugs, although we were there in the dry season. Easily accessible with 2wd. There's a trail alongside the river, which will bring you to somoto canyon without about a 30 minute hike. The trail is not super well marked, but if you just follow the river you'll make it. Hiking the entire canyon is not possible without a boat or floaty but from this side you can make it about halfway down the canyon on foot.
Report Check-InSave place to sleep, some People crossing The river (local People), but save.
Some trash around.
This place is perfect. But make sure you have all your drinking water and food ready. Locals are lovely. Please clean up after. Don’t leave your rubbish out. The wild dogs and donkeys will leave you present of mess to wake up to ;)
Report Check-InGreat place, very quiet. Road in had 2 not great spots but we had no problems towing the car in. Follow the road until you go down a hill to what looks like a gravel wash with a dirt track going straight and a gravel track turning sharp right. Go straight across and take first turn to the left. Look for a dirt track to the right in the trees going up a slight hill. Take this to the river. The water was high due to 2 days of rain. Some shady spots. Just 10 minutes to the IPSA office in Somoto.
Report Check-Inour first stop in Nicaragua and on of the bests in central america, because the guys working/living there are super super friendly. we stayed here two nights. we played cards with them the two evenings, they brought us coffee several times.
you can start the hike to Somoto canyon here. we did the two miradores and swimming in the canyon in 4-5 hour's, including a large rest. I think it's less then ten kilometers.
in March the water is very low, at the camp it's more a lake than a river.
no claro internet, but when you go the river 300 meters up, you will have connection.
highly recommended!
Report Check-InWe spent 3 nights at this nice spot. There were some workers preparing a comedor for holy week parties. They told us that many people will be heading this spot to celebrate.
The land is public, the woman who owns the comedor that will be selling beer at holly week told us it was able to camp and secure! She even bought us some rosquillas and served us free coffe. Good people.
Somoto seems to be pretty secure and calm. Everyone told us that.
Excelente lugar, fuimos caminando hasta el cañon bordeando el río y entramos gratis. Se tarda 1 hs en llegar al cañón. Bonito y tranquilo.
El río estaba bien para nadar, bañarse y lavar. Un lujo!
Report Check-InSuper spot to stop. very quiet, a few passers by wish you Hola but otherwise completely peace and quiet. no roosters, no dogs! (Well, only in the distance!)
Report Check-InNice place and quiet. A few people crossing the river here but all really nice.
Report Check-InGood spot to chill out. Some locals come here to swim. All really friendly. About 100 meters futher from here is river crossing for cars and not so many places to park. To drive to canyon entrance from here is prox. 10min
