Campsite 5.8 on Medano Primitive Road in Great Sand Dunes National Preserve. 4WD and high clearance is required to get here. The road to get here is a rocky, slightly steep in places, and has nine water crossings.

NOTE: If you are traveling West to East on Medano Primitive Road then there is another 9 miles to go on CR 559 after you exit the National Preserve until you get to Highway 69 and the first couple miles is not much more roadlike than Medano Primitive Road itself.

Perfect place , well established with fire pits and bear box. The first spot was perfect as it was super windy and this place had many trees to cut most of it. But going past there are many other spots also great.
Report Check-InCamped at site 0.25 just inside of the GSD National Preserve (starts at 5.2 miles on Medano Pass road). Bear box and fire ring at each site. Stopped at the visitor center in the GSD Nat Park for info and map for dispersed camping in the preserve (free and fcfs). Stayed 5 nights. Wildlife seen - deer, birds, fox, chipmunks, & birds. Hiked up to site at marker 4.5 inside preserve (9.5 miles), beautiful pristine land! 4x4 required to access.
