Description

UPDATE: road is fixed. See 03FEB2023 update

CAUTION: this is the section where the armed robberies take place... best to ask for a police escort in either town.

There is a steep 3km rough section here, clearly hasn’t been maintained in a long time! If going west (from Santiago to San Pedro) you’ll going uphill which might be doable in a high clearance 2WD IF it’s dry (I wouldn’t recommend trying it) in any case high clearance strongly recommended if your care about your undercarriage.
Going in the opposite direction (downhill) high clearance 2WD should do the trick.

Latest Check-Ins

Yep I don’t know why this is, but these guys seem to be able to terrorise both locals and tourists, police say they can’t do much. I managed to turn around quickly. This is really too bad since this region is composed of such wonderful people. I recommend the other side from Panajachel to San Antonio, the road is nice and has beautiful sceneries and hotels that are a bit expensive. Beyond that you’ll need to turn around, the road becomes a trail doable on a bike or 4wd.

Report Check-In

Road is now paved. Locals report there haven't been any robberies in over a year.

Spoke with locals in the area. This used to be a bad unpaved road. Locals and travelers had to drive slow. Groups of people would come out of the woods and demand money or belongings. However, the road is now paved and the robberies have stopped because cars drive too fast. No trouble here anymore!!

Report Check-In

The road is now fully paved, hurrah! Police stationed at a couple of points along it - when I asked about the general situation one of them suggested that it's still not a great idea to drive it at night, but during the day all is well!

We asked the police in Santiago if we needed any help getting through that area and they said no, they are working on the road and there are security checkpoints throughout the passage. We found it to be a little tricky getting up the dirt section but the rest is a very nicely paved road through the mountains. We saw people picnicking, there’s a paintball range, people walking, and several armed security guards throughout the drive. We drove through around midday on a Wednesday.
