Mexico
These ruins are open as of May 2021, about 1/2hr drive from Xpujil. Entrance is free, just a caretaker there to check you in, politely asked for a propina which we gave. Relatively small site but amazing carvings on some of the temples. Spider and Howler monkeys in the trees. The road is mostly paved but some big potholes and narrow sections, last 2kms is a narrow bumpy dirt road. Nothing 2wd or any car couldn’t handle. At 3pm we had the place to ourselves.
Why? By checking in after you’ve visited a place you let others know this place is still functional. You can also add or correct any information.
Wow, absolutely junglebook-feeling. The ruins are so pretty, the jungle track is in good shape. We were the only ones there, saw monkeys and capybara (?). The guy running the ruins (Salvador) is super friendly! He didn’t charged us for the ruins and camping, but we gave him 100 peso donation because that place is so magical. Toilets are really clean and flushing.
Report Check-InI confirm the ruins are a little gem that you can visit for free, you will be certainly the only visitors of the day. The night on the parking is very quiet. In bonus there are clean toilet and water tap. We saw 7 howling monkeys in the ruins (around 5pm they are playing a lot), 5 toucans et few parrots. From the parking lot there is also a nice walk to do in the jungle, the track is well maintened.
Report Check-Infantastic little spot, bumpy Road up but we'll worth it. ruins were brilliant had the whole place to ourselves, the same with the campgrounds. Was still free, and toilets were very clean. I'd easily stay there again
Report Check-InLarge parking lot in front of ruins. Free, as is the entrance. Cleans toilets a little bit further up. Guards are very friendly. One of them
Give us a little tour and we give him a tip afterwards. Saw lots of howler monkeys. Ruins are beautiful! And you can hike a little bit on some trails. Spend two days here! Would recommend!!
Wonderful place, about 1km before the ruins there is a nice campground with pit toilet, space to put tents or camper, some cabins they will probably put in service one day, fireplaces and tables, our MoHo made it through the not so bad road and we could camp for a week. Few visitors (no more than 2 or 3 cars a day), ruins are cool (nice maya inscriptions) and free. All the animals around come to drink from the small water spot (no crocodile here)... Just be careful and check yourself because there are some tiny ticks (as our dogs and cats are treated I suppose they try to get to us!). Perfect place to disconnect, relax and take time. If you have your bike there are some cool roads through the woods... Perfect spot to keep it as it is!
Report Check-InImportant note after being a week, guards in the entrance of the ruins are very nice people, one of them Elías told us about animals here and some about ruins. He also told us that campground is totally free but a man called Don Victor sometimes comes and try to charge tourists to camp... Don't let yourself it is totally free. They already told him to leave people at peace but it seems some fall into the not friendly guy tramp... (he also said to be careful cos is also a thief so don't let your car open). We did not met him... Probably because of the 2 dogs but better being aware!
