Mexico
Rancho el Camino now allows overlanders to camp on their property. The ranch is a community outreach and youth services facility that serves the locals of La Paz.
Located at the base of the mountains at the end of a 5.5 km flat dirt road, the ranch is accessible to 2WD, low clearance vehicles. NOTE: google map directions are WRONG. Exit the highway (Libramiento) at coordinates 24.165750, -110.250237, approx. 1.1 km north of the Checkpoint Pemex station. (See detailed directions below)
After weeks of beach camping, this was a nice change of pace. We hiked the surrounding mountains, rode horses and caught up on our emails/social media while enjoying a different side of Baja. This is truly an oasis in the desert where spring water literally flows from the ground creating a legitimate palm oasis in the arroyo.
The camping area is at the upper portion of the fenced property. The lower portion of the ranch (a 5 minute walk from the camping area) contains a pavilion with WiFi, children’s playground, horse corrals and garden. If interested, ranch staff can lead hikes and horse rides (reach out to pre-arrange).
Special considerations:
-Front gate clearance is 13’4”
-For Pet owners, this is an active ranch with ranch dogs and horses. Dog owners should plan to keep their dogs on leashes to avoid any problems.
-Secure dry camping with WiFi for 200 pesos donation.
-Close to the ferry and Checkpoint Pemex Station (with laundry and showers)

As described. Overlanders pull through gate then 180* to the left, camping in front of Overlanders sign on cistern and around lone shade tree with picnic table. Paul and facilities are a short walk down the road to the east. Staff leave after 2:00 pm. kids still on break so don't know that situation.
