A beautiful beach with very cozy vibes. We stood right on the beach with a view of the surfers. The constant wind swept a lot of sand into our bus, but also cooled us down ;) Ideal beach for beginner surfers! The road was manageable for our 7m bus with 2WD, but we probably wouldn't dare do it in the rain as there are two very steep sections and the road probably turns into mud.

We spend one night here due to rain forecast our van is not 4x4 and we hat to leave before the rain road is not to bad our promaster made it without a problem.

Report Check-In

Road has been rebuild. No problem here. Steep but doable with any car.

Report Check-In

we slept between tacos locos and 3 hermanos, some people partying late night but because it was a holiday day.
no privacy but felt safe.

Report Check-In

we made it up and down the hill with our truck camper without 4x4.
you camp for free in front of the nice surf break. spent one night there, left before it started to rain otherwise impossible to get up the hill again. take it very slowly and just try when it is dry :)

Report Check-In

Came back when it was dry. Nice spot. Lots of foreigners taking surf lessons. The restaurant a little behind the others has a cold shower for 30 NIO. Sometimes they don’t have water.

You will probably meet Luis. He sells coconuts for 100 NIO each and rents chairs and umbrellas. He’s a chatty guy and will definitely try to sell you something. Nice guy though.

We slept with the doors open and it was still crazy hot 🥵 Starlink works great here.

More info on the hills, maybe this helps someone decide to drive there during rainy season or not:

It was raining pretty hard and the road getting to the first hill was super muddy with very little rocks in the mud to help with traction. We have a Ford Transit with AWD and BFG All-Terrain tires. We off-road more than we probably should. Went up the first hill before the very long and steep downhill to the beach begins. I walked it first before attempting to see if it felt safe to do in the rain.

I think our car coouuuld have handled it, but I decided not to try. There was a slight chance that with our weight (4000 kg) and the slickness of the road that we would start sliding. And the only way to stop would be to end up crashing at the bottom as other motorcycles and possibly pedestrians come up. Didn’t feel comfortable risking it. Our first gear just isn’t low enough, would be riding the brakes the whole way down. With true 4-low 4WD I would have probably tackled it.

Hope this helps someone! Ended up staying at Playa Marcella in front of the restaurant for free 👍🏼

Meant to add - the more direct route to/from Rivas is unpaved all the way - not bad condition, though a little bumpy, but probably at least as quick to take the twice-the-distance one further to the south, which is paved and in good condition.

Spent a couple of nights in the parking lot to the left as you arrive, after chatting to the staff at 3 hermanos. Very peaceful (other than the exceptionally loud frogs after a day of rain!) and the staff were friendly. Surfing lessons available for $30 per lesson, and you can keep the board for the day afterwards to practice - seems to be THE surfing spot of the area; at high tide there were hundreds of people there, with all the companies in San Juan apparently bringing their clients here also - everything from total beginners to advanced. Saw an incredible sunset on the first night, coinciding with low tide so reflected in the whole flat mirror-like beach, just beautiful.

Opted to stay put for a second night because I didn't fancy tackling the steep hill after the day of rain - the otherwise empty Tacos Locos restaurant allowed me to plug in and work there for the afternoon.

Report Check-In

We spent a night on the beach in our RV for 50 cordoba. It was safe. The park attendant slept on the premises. The road getting there is steep but doable in pretty much any vehicle.

Report Check-In

As described. Flat area to camp and pitch a tent. Restaurant is expensive for the quality you get. Shower is cold and run down, but works.
There is a security guard at night, tipped him a 1$ to keep an eye for my Moto
Was quiet on Thursday night

This beach is a great spot to wild camp, one of the best we've been so far in our trip, although it gets full of tourists on the afternoon for the sunset and surfing.

To get here there is a steep uphill, a sign that says 4x4 only and a VERY steep downhill afterwards, which obviously turns to an uphill when you get out. We went with our Iveco Daily 2WD and made it out but it was not easy.
You can make it without 4WD if you have a strong engine and it's dry. We don't think we would have made it out if it rained. In fact, we left when we saw clouds coming.

Locals told us many get stuck trying to make the uphill and have to call a toe truck to get out.

WARNING. Came here to surf with a buddy. I’m a beginner surfer and while my friend was giving me a few pointers on the board we were approached by a man who said no one could “teach” on this beach without paying. He threatened us both with physical harm to ourselves and our property. We reported him and the locals said that is a problem and self-proclaimed “king of the beach”. With so many great surfing spots in Nicaragua, it’s easy to avoid this one

Perfect place to camp on the beach! There is a security guard named Luis, you can ask him for a shower (30c). Good place to bath and surf, we stayed 3 nights and enjoyed a lot!

Nice place to stay. Segurity to sleep. Beautiful place. Free.

Super super spot! You can wild camp in front of the beach, great sunsets. You can set up a fire at night. During the day it’s full of people surfing and chilling at the beach, and after 6 pm is deserted and you have it all for you! If you rent a surfboard at the bar right on the beach they let you use the shower/toilet for free.

Report Check-In

Place is great and beautiful, full of surfers and amazing sunsets. However, we had a terrible experience one night.

There's a guy, (for reference: looks like he's in his mid thirties, has dreads and a moon & sun tattoo on his right arm) who lives here (next to the brick oven) and came screaming on our third night telling us to leave. He broke our chairs and table, also threatened to blow up our camper. Said he didn't like for people to camp "on his side of the land".

Wish he would have kindly told us this days before so we could have moved. We left the next morning.

Report Check-In

Do not camp between Tacos Locos
and Maderas Sunset bar in rainy season. A river forms there when it rains hard. If we had parked 2m further north our van would have been swept away and become part of the beach like a shipwreck.

Recommend you to camp on the bigger area on the South side of the beach next to 3 hermanos.

Great spot right on the beach with shade and sun. Perfect spot to watch the surf and play with dogs. Three restaurants down on the beach, but I recommend going up the little goat track up to hush hotel. They have an amazing view, pool, yoga, and great food and cocktails. Happy hour ends at 4 FYI. Don't miss this spot! The beach is so beautiful!

Report Check-In

top spot right on the beach with awesome surf.
FREE
stayed inbetween the bars, as better wifi reception from studio cafe (get some beers with them and they give you the password.
locals are super welcoming and if you have drinks or food everynow and then, they will let you use their toilets (otherwise C20 at tres hermanos to the left).

Very nice lovely beach. Camping is free, enough space for big rigs also. Very good spot for surfing. Lots of surfers daytime. We stayed there 3 nights never alone, there were other campers here two. You can get electricity from the restaurant for $5/day. There is a possibility to use shower and toilet for $1. Everyone is very helpful, we had great time there with 4 kids.

Report Check-In

Stayed here for free right on the beach. Very quiet at night. Nearby bar and hostel have security at night so maybe that can reassure some. Can also stay at the studio bar for 10 if you need power. Great beach to visit and surf! As you drive up to the beach bars, go right and there is a large parking area.

Report Check-In

we stayed one night, it's nice to swim here.
the beach is beautiful and there is some shade for cars. just go left before the bars, there is a large space for cars.

Sao 5 bares/restaurantes.

Perfect spot right on the beach, the road to come here has been reshaped last week. We had no issue to come here with our 24’ rv.
the ‘Maderas sunset bar’ kindly let us stay for free behind the restaurant on their car park.

We stayed two night in front of the beach on the left side. Next to the parking lot but almost on the beach. Nobody bother us. Good WiFi from sunset & cafe restaurant

Report Check-In

It's not possible to camp here, we stayed over night in our van then the owner of the tent/camp spot, José, rocked up in the morning and told us to move on. We will camp at the restaurant behind instead for $5. Would have loved free camping as it's so quiet and loved watching the waves through our bed window

Camped here for free after a day of surf. Beautiful spot to watch the sunset. We backed our vanagon up to face the ocean when we slept. Went to studio bar for showers which were $1 US per person. Very steep rocky dirt road to get here but our vanagon did it without 4x4. Great spot?

Report Check-In

We camped here for free right on the beach, the owner didn't mind at all. Beautiful spot, camped here for a few nights before crossing the border. No facilities but you could pay to use the restaurants if needed.
