Cliff top | Wild Camping

Really lovely. I camped at the cliff in an extended sprinter…we’ll see how it goes getting out tomorrow but we got in ok. It surprisingly wasn’t windy today and was a fabulous place to peacefully hang out with the dogs and enjoy a view. 3 bars of Verizon.

seeing as how it's the only public land within ~300 miles, it'll do. but boy it gets windy and the dort road stops being a good drivable Road real quick, pay attention. the turnaround /camping places are small. the campsite around the corner has large flat area for large rigs. it's quiet there's room for quite a few people but no people when I was there

2/22/24 Great view, good space for a big rig or two, just three miles south of I-40 could get muddy during rain. The view at night was amazing, all the wind generators and stars. Verizon three bars. No signs posted, overlooking the campgrounds of what used to be Lake McClelan

Awesome place just off I40. Not too bad to get all the way through to the edge however if it were wet and rainy out I could see some difficulty. Couple spots right at the entrance just in case however. Little windy but amazing views and great Verizon 3bars LTE

3 obvious spots:
Closest to road. Plenty of room and flat. Easy access
Next one in a little bit rutted road, little less area but still flat
Cliff top. Pretty rutted. Room to loop around but tough with any trailer. You can get flat on the south side of the loop. Careful after dark. The path runs right next to the cliff

This was very tricky for me to find, especially at night, so I ended up staying down below. After I figured out it’s accessed from a separate road from the campgrounds below I used Gaia GPS and easily found it the next morning.

Great spot. I’ve been here several times when traveling 40. Still quiet and clean. Let’s keep it that way. The spot closest to the entrance is best for anyone not in a real 4wd. I’m in a sprinter 144 4wd and pulled into the spot farthest from the entrance only to find it has washed out significantly. Took most of what my van had to get out without issue. First spot is still level and offers plenty of room to spin a van or small trailer around. Lake is dry but still pretty views.

This place is wonderful. Right off the interstate but feels very remote. Deeper part is via a VERY uneven washed out road but nothing my RAV4 couldn't handle. No neighbors tonight. Extremely windy but a gorgeous view. Scarce level ground in the back. Front is perfectly even but in road view.

Great view a little rough to get out to the cliff. We had a truck and a truck camper and it was pretty easy. We had a LOT of wind in the middle of the night.

As described. Decided to take one of the spots right before the cliff top. The road is pretty rutted with large rocks sticking out.

Great site. Came in after dark in a 144 Sprinter with 2WD duallies. Definitely needed our high clearance. Lake is dry but what a view to wake up to. The came sites across the lake look like they are shut down, no one in site. 3 bars of ATT coverage as well.

Great spot. I have a fedex truck RV and couldn’t get far in but there was space for 3 or so rigs right off the road. Nice views. Secluded. Was not disturbed. 1-3 bars ATT

Spent 1 night here, great spot! Like others say, overlooks the grasslands and other campers below. Use your satellite navigation and reference it to the one in the pictures on here for easiest way to find it.

We were in see season and the lake was completely dried up. No bud at sunset like others had. Difficult to find flat spots but doable.

4x4 not needed. If you have a shorter wheel base, you’ll be fine without a high clearance. Just plan your line. My gf got in with her Ford Edge. Of course this could change with wear and tear on the site.

Got in at 6pm, there was one other jeep towing a camper but didn’t feel comfortable pulling it in, I had no problem sharing the area but I ended up having it to myself. Nice spot, no bugs, sunset and lake views. Can get windy. Might be tough for some to find level ground. It’s mainly loose gravel and rock, so it’ll be hard to stake anything down. Got 4-5 bars LTE with T-Mobile.

great spot. not t minutes north of I40. I went back to try hitting cliff edge spot in my Nissan NV2500. hit a couple of muddy spots (pictured) made it to last spot before the cliff edge area. Definitely would not go back without 4x4. I stayed closer to roadway because of rain forecast tonight. great cell signal Tmobile 4g 5 bars

Stayed for 2 nights in our truck camper. No one bothered us. We stayed at the end of the loop and used 4x4 when we were leaving. Not a great view it looks like a swamp lol but it was better then a rest stop

access really isn't that bad. I made it to the cliff at night in a 2WD full size pickup that has been lowered 1 inch. amazing view.

Really beautiful place in the national grassland. Road gets uneven with ruts and rocks so beyond the first turnout I’d suggest 4x4 especially if arriving after dark with low visibility.

Road does end in a loop where the actual cliff top is.

This camp spot is as described by others. We stopped at the first pullout to camp in our 2wd 170 Sprinter van. The final spot is very rocky and uneven and we didn’t want to take a chance of scraping the bottom of the van. The first pull out is mostly flat and the view is nice even though it’s not as dramatic as the end of the road. A perfect place to spend the night on our cross country trip!

Nice quiet spot for a night. Didn’t drive all the way to the cliff edge because the last bit of road is more rocky and rutted than I want to deal with.

Unbelievably beautiful spot to spend a night. Worth it to go to the end. Though the first big turn out is flatter the end loop is spectacular. Definitely need high clearance. But no 4WD needed. Just a lot of big rocks and tall grass to get over. And only @¼ mile of it. Easy in my Honda Pilot. Totally Worth it!

OMG. I was gonna crash at the rest stop???? This is one of the most beautiful spots I’ve stayed at!!!!!! Texas desolation at its best. The amount of visible stars is overwhelming. Calm & peaceful. Lovely sunset. Weather was perfect. Hot when we arrived and cold overnight. YES! You need higher clearance to get here. But not 4wd. It’s just very rocky. Not even many holes. Totally worth the slightly stressful ½ mile!!!!

Little rough getting to the cliff top. 4x4 recommended but spots just off the road accessible to most.

Found a flat spot on the north side of the loop.

Great view with no light pollution. Full Verizon 4g service.

Didn’t make it to the top - got turned around and headed to the campground. Paid the five dollars and had the campground for the night but honestly it wasn’t bad. Decent camping spot

Road in is manageable up to a nice flat spot but if you want to get out to the cliffside spot its pretty Rocky and rutted.
Lots of crickets and ants. Big ol skeeters came out at sunset.
Bit of trash. Nice views still.
Good 1 nighter.

Awesome place to stay the night or a few if you choose. Road in isn't bad but I would not attempt it in a low clearance vehicle. We didnt need to use 4x4.
I would not recommend bringing a large rig such a motorhome here.

Stopped here on my way through the area. There are 2 sites with clearings. The first site is perfectly flat (where I chose to camp) and the other is at the end of the turnaround better view but that area is not that flat.
The dirt road leading up to the cliff is deeply rutted so 4x4 is recommended but in dry conditions can be doable with a high clearance vehicle.

To get here, you’ll turn left on the dirt/gravel road about a mile and a half from the campgrounds / lake entrance - or about 2 miles from the highway, assuming you’re coming north of i40. (Look at the picture map I posted to get a better idea)
There’s a couple flat spots easy to get to before getting to the cliff. But to make it all the way to the cliff, high clearance is definitely needed. If it rains you most likely will need 4x4. I made it in a 170 sprinter van 2WD and do not recommend it for a van that long. I scraped the bottom of my van. But once you get to the cliff you have an amazing view and even better sunset over the lake and can see the wind turbines on the horizon. Night sky is amazing. Ah also, there’s a lot of mosquitoes before sunset. They disappeared afterwards.

There are no sign prohibiting overnight parking or camping. No signs whatsoever. It’s a national grassland.

Very good cell reception with Verizon (3-4 bars LTE). It’s not leveled but you can somehow manage between rocks and get it to a comfortable level.
