maybe one of my favorite boondocks. really pretty spot on the John Day. gravel road in has been recently graded, in excellent condition. pit toilet clean and stocked. I had a peaceful night on s Spring Sunday. no one else here. imagine it could be busy in the summer.
Report Check-InUnbelievable place. A little out of the way but so worth it! We came in through the west because someone mentioned the road is easier on bigger rigs. We drive a 35ft skoolie and it was not easy! The curves were tight on basically a cliff side and we had to do a lot of maneuvering. We took the other way in when we left and it was MUCH easier. We had what looked to be the only spot with shade that wasn’t right on the rock bed by the river. Everyone else was parked out there. Empty during the week and had the whole place to ourselves.
Report Check-InStayed there for the weekend. This place is sooo beautiful ! You can swim in the river if your not too cold ;)
It's free and not too crowded when we were here.
We would take the road from the west (the longest) which is more easy to access
No phone reception

Beautiful large space with several locations to pitch your tent or place your vehicle. Even in late summer there’s still water running down the creek. Stunning views over the mountains nearby. We were not alone, there were several other cars/RV’s. Because the place is so big though we didn’t see each other from the place we camped.
Report Check-InBeautiful and secluded mid-week. The last 1.5 miles of road into the area is rutted and vehicles cannot pass, at least not mid to large sized vehicles cannot.
Report Check-InFavorite from this trip. Perfect for vans. 16 miles in from Mitchell (8 paved, 6 good gravel, 3 bumpy gravel). We enjoyed waterfront camping on the gravel bar. Used by locals on the weekend but had it to ourselves come Monday. Enjoyed watching the rafters and people fishing go by.
Report Check-Ingorgeous and wild, for sure. no cell service. pit toilet at head of CG, a handful of flat spots with fire pits along the river, many have room for multiple rigs.
Report Check-InLost of space but not a lot of shade. Visited in summer time so the river was low and very warm. Camped on the riverbed. You'll definitely need something between you and the ground/rocks. Dispersed camping, no fee
Report Check-InSpot is not good for tent camp, Best suited for rv. Site is dusty and rocky. Near river, most sites in sun. Gravel road but can be accessed by all cars. One pit toilet, no fire pits or picnic benches.
